The road home ended its third season with a beautiful ending, bringing Colton Landry back to the fold and articulating what he knows about the pond.
But, despite this, it highlights a lingering problem: Del Landry remains a mystery.
She is the patriarch of the Landry family, a stable anchor in time travel and secret storms, but we know nothing about what she sees. With the Landry family peeling off layers every season in the past, why does Del’s point of view still maintain length?
Characters in the Shadow
Regardless of the way you go home to explore its characters, DEL is still one of the most frustrating. She proposes a warm southern charm, but she often feels emotionally closed.
Although it is understandable – losing a child is unimaginable, her grief defines her in a way that keeps her family and audiences far away.
Del lost Jacob, and in the process, she also lost Kate and Colton. Kat feels invisible after his brother disappears, and Colton tries to reconnect with his wife.
result? A woman spent many years maintaining her protection, living a seemingly fulfilling life in the safe haven, but never really moved forward.
Stories told outside
In three seasons, we’ve seen who in the eyes of others – Kat, Alice, Colton’s ghost – but we rarely see what she’s thinking.
Even if she appears in the past timeline, the focus is not on her, but on her perception of others.
Kat and Alice use the pond to understand their lives, rewriting their understanding of the past while keeping Del in the dark.
When Alice began visiting Del’s young self, she hoped it would build a deeper connection between them. Instead, Del flinched – worried that the past would betray the memories she clung to.
Her leap into the pond is the moment of surrender. Finally, she faces the truth: Colton never intends to keep her secret.
But even this realization is the discovery of Kat and Alice, not the shots from Del herself.
By the end of the homepage Season 3, we even saw Colton’s point of view – before we really get to know Del’s point of view.
Is Del always an afterthought?
The ending establishes an exciting new mystery – Elliot’s mother does not abandon him. She travels in time. While this is compelling, it’s hard to ignore that the DEL will push it to the background again.
How long will we have to wait before we get home to get her due?
She is not just a sad mother, nor a stubborn woman. Her pain, resilience and the depth of choices she made should be given the same cautious storytelling as Colton, Kate and Alice.
The show spent three seasons uncovering the past through the eyes of the Landry women. Isn’t it time we finally see it through DEL?
