Hugh Grant is explaining why he’s skeptical about starring in some big-budget films.
in a vanity fair In a profile posted Wednesday, the actor reflected on working more in independent film and television and why he turned down some roles in major Hollywood studio films.
“I’ve turned down films that I didn’t think were of sufficient quality or independence of the filmmakers – you feel like a big company [was] “I don’t want to make this decision,” he said.
As for how he found out, Grant explained, “I asked them point-blank. I asked the directors. You can tell very early on because you probably have some ideas about the role before you sign up — you ask suggestions, and you’ll know if there’s a lot of resistance from uncreative executives.
Movies are the exception Dungeons & Dragons: Thief’s GloryGrant called it “a really great movie.” But as for the film’s box office performance — which exceeded expectations at the time but wasn’t enough to launch a new franchise for Paramount and eOne — he said that remains “the biggest mystery.”
“Why hasn’t anyone done market research before?” he said. “I think that’s the problem: Basically, people just think, I don’t want to see a movie about this game. Why hasn’t anyone asked the public?
As for another notable studio film, Grant will also reprise his role as Daniel Cleaver in the fourth Bridget Jones film crazy about this boy. But before signing on, Grant said he was initially not “fascinated” by what was in store for his character in the script. The actor previously declined to star in the 2016 film bridget jones’ baby: “I couldn’t really get into my character – he just didn’t belong here, so I stepped aside.”
However, he did tie the story of the fourth film together. “I loved the script – it made me cry, and I wanted to help with the script,” he said. “But the truth is, Daniel Cleaver wasn’t involved at all. They wanted him to be in, but ultimately, they did something that I didn’t like.
To rectify his dissatisfaction with his character, Grant said he wrote some scenes that the filmmakers really liked and incorporated them into the story. “This is definitely the best [Bridget Jones book]I thought it was very interesting and very, very touching. I wasn’t involved much, I did a week’s work and that was it… but when you see the film, you’re moved.
Grant will appear in the film alongside Renée Zellweger, Emma Thompson, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall.
