David Lynch, beloved film producer and director known for his dark, surreal vision of television classics twin peaksas well as movies including mulholland drive and blue velvetalready dead. He is 78 years old.
Lynch’s family announced the news of his death in a Facebook post on Thursday (January 16). “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of man and artist David Lynch,” the statement read alongside a photo of the artist playing guitar. “We would like to have some privacy at this time. He is no longer with us and there is a big hole in the world. But, as he said, ‘focus on the donut, not the hole.’ “It was a beautiful day, with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.

Lynch’s death came just five months after he was diagnosed with emphysema due to years of smoking and feared he would contract COVID-19, so he was quarantining at home. At the time, he added that he had no plans to make another movie. “I’ll try to finish from the far end if I have to,” Lynch said. “I don’t really like that.”
The Missoula, Montana, native worked as a painter and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before turning his attention to filmmaking. His breakthrough came in 1977 Eraserheadbecame popular on the midnight movie underground circuit. Many of his famous films include 2001’s mulholland drive Starring Justin Theroux, Naomi Watts, Lola Harlin; and 1986’s blue velvetstarring Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern.
In television, he is best known as the visionary behind the mystery series twin peaksThe show aired for two seasons from 1990 to 1991 and returned for a third season in 2017. Angelo Badalamenti won the 1991 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
Lynch’s projects have also appeared on the Billboard charts. Music from Twin Peaks: Season 2 and Beyond Ranking No. 17 on the Soundtrack Charts as of April 27, 2019. That same week, it reached No. 68 on the Top Album Sales chart. his third studio album, big dreamwhich peaked at No. 40 on the Independent Albums Chart in 2013 and currently ranks at No. 167 on the Album Sales Chart.
He has also directed several music videos, including Nine Inch Nails’ 2013 “Came Back Haunted” video and Moby’s 2009 “Shot in the Back of the Head” video.
