James Gunn explains DCU projects will have multiple tones, calls Superman ‘serious’ and ‘family-friendly’ — GeekTyrant

one thing James Gunn has clearly stated his Superman One thing about the film is that it doesn’t try to imitate a dark and edgy tone Zack Snyderof man of Steel. His film will be different in many ways.

The filmmaker recently talked about how his DCU movies will have a variety of tones, and in the process, he revealed that his Superman will be “serious” and “family-friendly.”

For the most part, Superman has always been a family-friendly character because he’s seen as a true symbol of hope, and that’s something Gunn hopes to bring back to the legendary superhero.

In an interview with MovieZine, Gunn talked about how the different movies and TV shows in the universe won’t have a clear tone. Instead, Gunn hopes to draw inspiration from comic book history to provide a variety of stories.

“One of the things I love about DC Comics is they’ve always been able to tell different stories in different ways,” Gunn said. “They’re telling more family-oriented stories, more adult-oriented stories, dark Stories, lighthearted stories.

He went on to explain: “We have some relatively serious matters, such as Superman And then there are some relatively comedic things like peacemaker All in the same universe. Very adult stuff peacemaker [and] Something very family friendly e.g. Superman”.

The bottom line is that the DCU won’t take the same formulaic approach as the MCU, instead he wants each project to have the tone needed to tell a strong story.

“I think being able to tell different types of stories makes things interesting,” he added. “One of the things I’m a little tired of is all these stories being relatively the same. I’m trying to get out of this. We’re trying to get out of this in Washington.

I love that Gunn wants to do something very different with the DCU than what we’ve seen in the past with Marvel and the DCEU. He wanted to make Dublin City University something unique of its own and differentiated from everything else that had been done and was being done.

What are your thoughts on what Gunn is doing on DC film and TV projects?

“Superman” will be released exclusively in theaters on July 11, 2025.
