first trailer James Gunnof superman has landed, and fans are already raving about its vibrant Silver Age-style visuals.
With bold colors and imaginative sci-fi elements, the aesthetic is a clear homage to Superman’s comic book roots in the 1950s and 1960s. But Gunn is also creating a story that goes deeper than the superficial plot usually associated with the era.
During a press conference during the trailer premiere, Gunn shared his vision for combining classic Silver Age imagery with modern, character-driven storytelling.
“I love the aesthetic of the Silver Age of comics,” he said. “But… it’s a story about a man and his external and internal obstacles and what he faces in life, and that’s what this movie is about.”
While these images may evoke the energetic feel of Superman’s early days, Gunn stressed, superman It lies in the exploration of human character.
“In this movie, we’re really getting to know Superman as a character and what his personal obstacles are,” Gunn explained.
“While some of the imagery is very Silver Age, I don’t think it’s a very Silver Age plot. So it has elements of tradition and elements of newness. I think that’s where we found the balance.
Gunn’s challenge was to respect people’s long-held expectations of Superman while pushing the character in new directions.
“Superman is one of the most popular characters, famous characters in the world, and everyone has their own idea of what he should be,” he said. “Find something as true and genuine as possible…It’s trial and error, trial and error, trial and error.”
A key to achieving this authenticity was working with the film’s creative team, including costume designer Juliana Makovsky and the visual effects department.
They work together to blend the retro charm of the Silver Age with grounded realism. “We wanted to give it a Silver Age feel, but equally, we also wanted to look at these things in a way that we’ve never seen before.”
As a result, this will be a film that pays homage to Superman’s legacy while offering a fresh, heartfelt take on the character.
As Gunn said, “At the end of the day, if I can make something that’s authentic, then I think it’s going to work.” And judging by the trailer released, it looks like he’s delivering on that promise.
