In 2023, Alex Murdaugh was convicted of killing his wife and son Paul two years earlier. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. In January, he was denied a new trial after he requested an appeal.
A few years before the murders, Buster Murdo’s classmate Stephen Smith was killed in what was believed to be a hit-and-run accident.
Based on new evidence gathered in the Murdo family slayings, police reopened Smith’s case and reclassified it as a murder. Buster Murdaugh denied any involvement in Smith’s death. No arrests have been made in Smith’s case, which is often linked to coverage of the Murdough family.

The family has always seemed connected to the death of those around them, and the murders of Paul and his mother Maggie were the final events that led to the final conviction.
The series is based on Maggie Murdock and Alex Murdaugh’s stranger-than-fiction family drama, based on Mandy Matney’s countless hours of reporting. is a journalist and the founder of the popular Murdo Murders Podcast.
