A pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland during the filming of “1939” The Wizard of Oz It went to auction this weekend for a whopping $28 million. Heritage Auctions handled the sale, and with the buyer’s premium, the slippers sold for $32.5 million.
Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena said of the sale:
“Judy Garland’s ruby slippers are like no other Hollywood memorabilia.
“This stunning result reflects the importance of movies and film memorabilia to our culture and to collectors. Being able to be a part of the Slipper’s epic journey across the rainbow and to its new home is a joy for all at Heritage.” Such an honor.
The slippers are one of four known to have survived since Garland wore them while filming the classic film. Heritage auctioned off the pair, famously stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in 2005 and recovered by the FBI 13 years later. Michael Shaw put them up for auction, attracting more than 1,800 bidders from around the world.
Shaw’s collectible “Wicked Witch’s Hat” was also auctioned off for $2.93 million in a lengthy bidding war. This hat is the only one to have “M. Hamilton 4461-164” printed on the inside of the brim – a reference to Margaret Hamilton, the actress who played Ms. Gulch and the Wicked Witch of the West.
