K-pop’s presence on the Billboard 200 has been growing since June 2018, when BTS’ Love yourself: tears expelled post malone beer sticks and bentleys Becomes the first K-pop album or EP to reach No. 1 on all genre charts. This week, Street Children Jump becoming the 19th album or EP to achieve this feat.
Multiple K-pop artists have topped the Billboard 200 chart every year since 2018, but there are none in 2021. The peak year for the most No. 1 K-pop songs on the Billboard 200 (so far) is 2023, with five. Four in 2022 and four more in 2024.
That’s a lot of firsts for any genre, but especially one that’s still establishing itself in the global consciousness. (For example, the Recording Academy has not yet added a K-pop category. In most cases, K-pop entries compete in the overall pop category.)
Stray Kids and BTS each have six No. 1s on the Billboard 200 chart, making them tied for the lead among K-pop artists. ATEEZ is ranked runner-up and has two No. 1s on the chart. SuperM, BLACKPINK, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, NewJeans and TWICE all have a number one album to date.
