Vice President Kamala Harris makes unannounced trip to New York for appearance saturday night liveWith just three days left before the election, she took a break from the battleground states where she had been campaigning.
Harris departed on Air Force Two after wrapping up her campaign in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday (November 2). She was originally scheduled to fly to Detroit, but after the plane took off, aides said it was actually heading to New York.
Her appearance on the show was confirmed by three people familiar with Harris’ plans who were not authorized to speak publicly about them. This is the final saturday night live Tuesday’s episode before Election Day.
Actor Maya Rudolph, who first played Harris on the show in 2019 and reprized the role this season, did an accurate impression of the vice president, including calling herself “Momara.”
Rudolph kicked off the show’s season premiere with the line: “Okay, okay, okay. Look who fell out of the coconut tree.” She also joked about asking President Joe Biden to continue assume his position.
Harris’ husband, second gentleman Doug Emhoff, is played by former cast member Andy Samberg, while Biden is played by Dana Carvey , who also played then-President George H.W. Bush in the early 1990s.
Rudolph’s performance won praise from critics and the comedy community – including from Harris herself.
“Maya Rudolph — I mean, she’s amazing,” Harris said on the ABC show last month landscape. “She had it all, suits, jewelry, everything!”
Harris added that she was impressed by Rudolph’s “demeanor.”
Trump senior adviser Jason Miller expressed surprise that Harris appeared on the show saturday night liveconsidering her unflattering portrayal on the show.
Asked whether Trump was invited to attend, he said: “I don’t know. Probably not.
Politicians have a long history saturday night livewhich included Harris’ Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, who hosted the show in 2015.
Hillary Clinton was running for president during the 2008 Democratic primaries when she appeared next to Amy Poehler, who played her on the show, and delivered her iconic Exaggerated giggles. The real Clinton showed up and wondered, “Can I really laugh like this?”
Clinton returned in 2016 when she ran against Trump but ultimately lost.
first sitting president to appear on the show saturday night live Republican Gerald Ford did just that less than a year after the show premiered. Ford appeared on April 17, 1976, and delivered the show’s famous opening line, “Live from New York.”
Barack Obama was still only the Democratic presidential candidate when he emerged in February 2008, while Republican Bob Dole emerged in 1996 – just shy of losing the election to Democrats that year. Bill Clinton only had 11 days. Dole consoled Norm MacDonald, who plays the Kansas senator in the show.
Then there’s Tina Fey’s 2008 impression of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, particularly her joke that “I can see Russia from my house.” So cool, Fey won an Emmy. Palin herself appeared on the show during the season just weeks before the election.
