The Democratic nominee has been making waves in the media to appeal to younger voters, and she didn’t hold back on the show, especially when it came to Donald Trump’s relationship with leaders like Vladimir Putin.
“Donald Trump — he openly admires dictators and autocrats,” Harris said. “He has said that if re-elected as president, he wants to be a dictator from day one. He was played by these guys. He admired so-called strong men and he would be taken advantage of because they flattered him or offered him favors.
Harris also addressed new revelations in Bob Woodward’s book that Trump reportedly sent coronavirus tests to Russia early in the pandemic.
“The Commander-in-Chief of the United States of America must stand strong to defend the principles we hold dear. We should stand with our allies,” she declared. “We should strengthen existing alliances, such as NATO, which is the most powerful military alliance the world has ever seen. We must stand with our friend Ukraine, who is trying to change borders through force.
“I ask all of you here and all of you watching: Do you remember what those days were like? Do you remember how many people didn’t get tested and found ways to get tested? Harris said.
“This man is providing coronavirus test kits to Vladimir Putin? Think about what that means besides him sending a love letter to Kim Jong Un… who he thinks is his friend. What about the American people? They should is your first friend.
In the episode, Colbert also highlighted the recent surge in misinformation related to Hurricane Milton, a catastrophic storm threatening Florida’s west coast, and the use of artificial intelligence-generated imagery in political manipulation.
“An AI-generated image went viral showing Trump wading into floodwaters with first responders — it was completely false, but people fell for it,” Colbert said, criticizing how it was exploited strategies to influence voters.
At the same time, Harris urged those affected to listen to local officials while criticizing politicians who “lyed” to gain advantage.
“It was rough,” she said. “Man, don’t you have empathy for other people’s pain? Don’t you claim to be a leader without a sense of purpose?
Later in the interview, when asked about Trump’s 2020 election loss, Harris reiterated the sentiments she heard at the rally. “You lost manufacturing, you lost car factories, you lost elections. What does that make you? A loser. That’s what someone said at my rally. I thought it was funny.
“It’s accurate. It’s accurate,” Colbert said. Harris added, “This is what happens when I drink beer.”
During a lighter moment during the discussion, the conversation turned to music when Colbert asked Harris about her favorite Bob Seger song to appeal to Michigan voters. Harris replied: “I would choose Aretha or Eminem.”
