Bandaral Ngadu Queen and Walmatjarri Elder Kankawa Nagarra won the 20th Soundmerch Australian Music Awards (AMP) for her debut album Weimani.
This recognition highlights the cultural depth and emotional resonance of the album, which blends Aboriginal blues, country music and gospel with Nagara’s powerful storytelling.
album title, Weimanimeaning “disappearance,” reflects themes of loss, resilience, and cultural preservation. It was recorded on the land of her ancestors and features natural community sounds and original compositions, including the poignant title track, a duet with Archer.
In her acceptance speech, Nagara was proud of her achievements and the impact she has had on the Wonka Jonka community, particularly the schools and children she hopes to inspire as a role model. She dedicated the award to her “future ancestors.”
“I’m very excited and proud to receive this award. A huge thank you to AMP. Coming from the remote community of Wangkatjungka, which has been negatively impacted in the past, the focus is on issues and issues,” Nagara said.
“It’s not often that people see the beautiful and positive side of my family and I know this award brings great pride to the people of Wonka Jongka, especially the school and all the children I hope to be a role model for. I will give this award Dedicated to all my little greats, special mention to Tykrira Wilson who stands with me on the album cover I love them all so much they are my future ancestors.
AMP reviewers praised Weimani Its authenticity and deep connection to Australian heritage. Nagara stressed that the album’s production was rooted in ancestral traditions, calling it “thousands of years in the making.”
AMP founder Scott Murphy said that the review process was challenging, but ultimately rewarding. He called on Weimani A well-deserved winner said: “This morning the judges met face to face and decided that Wirlmarni, designed by Kankawa, would win. It was not a quick and easy decision – there were nine great albums, all very diverse, And all with the support of the judges. Congratulations to Kankawa for winning our 20th place prize!
Inspired by the UK’s Mercury Prize, AMP focuses exclusively on artistic merit, recognizing albums that transcend commercial considerations. There were more than 600 eligible albums in this year’s competition, with the shortlist narrowed to nine, showcasing the diversity of Australian music. Other nominees include Hiatus Kaiyote, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Dobby.
Born in the lands of Gooniyandi and Walmatjarri, Nagarr’s music blends traditional sounds with contemporary influences, writing songs in Creole, English and traditional languages. Her work highlights the intersection of nature, culture and music, reinforcing her message of environmental and cultural responsibility.
Kankawa Nagarra joins a distinguished line-up of past AMP winners including Genesis Owusu, Sampa the Great and The Avalanches. Nagara’s win not only cements her place in Australian music history, but also amplifies the voices and stories of her remote community on the global stage.
