Kevin Costnerhas a career filled with a series of successful film and television roles. Some classics include dream land, untouchable, dances with wolvesand more recently, the series yellowstone parkAs well as his passion project Film Legend, horizon.
Costner hopes he can add another film to his resume, the 1993 Academy Award-winning Holocaust drama, Schindler’s List.
When Costner read the script, he wanted to direct the film, but a deal was quickly struck and Steven Spielberg signed on to direct the epic. So the actor changed gears and ran for the starring role instead.
In a recent interview with “The Howard Stern Show” (via /film), Costner expressed his desire to be involved in the project. As with many of the other films he directed, Costner intended to direct and star in this film, but Hollywood had different plans.
When asked if he thought he would do better after seeing the final product, Costner admitted, “I’m not saying that because I don’t feel it. I think he made a lot of good choices.” Black & white.
However, even after being nominated to play Spielberg, Costner still wanted to be involved, which led to what he calls “a shameful story,” and a very personal audition.
He explained, “I went from wanting to direct it to wanting to star in it, and I said ‘I’ll come and give you an audition, Steven.'” I probably put him in an extremely awkward position, and then he said , ‘All right.
Later on a flight to New York, Costner was trying out for the role of Oskar Schindler, perfectly in character, right down to the costume.
“I put on a bald hat, I looked like that guy, and I auditioned for him in his kitchen, and ultimately I wasn’t the right guy for him,” Costner said.
Although it wasn’t the outcome he wanted, Costner clearly accepted Spielberg’s decision. The character ended up going to Liam Neeson It would go down as his greatest performance and remains one of the greatest films ever made.
In the end, it was clearly the right choice. Costner is a great actor, but I can’t imagine him playing the role of Oskar Schindler. But at least Costner was able to give it a try, and he never had to wonder what would happen if he threw his hat into the ring. As he said on “The Howard Stern Show,” “You have to try.”
