The episode begins with District Attorney Nicholas Baxter (Tony Goldwyn) announcing his support for alternative justice programs. This restorative justice initiative, led by Ella Monte-Brown, is committed to finding new ways to reduce crime and strengthen communities.
I immediately, I thought Ms. Forrest must have been the victim of the week, but she was not. Instead, this is a young lawyer, Eli Freeman, also known as Elija Penner, who was found killed in his apartment. When Elijah Penner left Baylor Church, the utopian sect of Mennonite church, he became Elijah Penner. Detectives Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) and Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) quickly dispatched the suspects of red herring. First, after finding the woman’s hair on site, they interviewed Ellie’s ex-girlfriend, Angie Marliss (Emma Jessop), a sustainable lingerie designer. det. Riley showed a less serious side when he asked Shaw if sustainable lingerie was a “bra made of plastic.” But, det. Riley confirmed Agni’s alibi.

The investigation brought the detective to a woman from Baylor Church in Martha Fairchild (Ashlyn Maddox). Martha volunteered to participate in a prison rehabilitation program, and Eli is offering her ex-scam Marcus Wright. CCTV captured Wright and Freeman, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison for his girlfriend’s death. Riley and Shaw consider him a suspect, but Mr Wright has a bad Billy. This is where things get interesting. Wright revealed that Martha not only used the “burner” phone that the church prohibits, but he was also the one he bought for her!
Riley revealed that her prints were found in the bathroom, on the bedside table, and on the headboard, suggesting an extramarital affair. Lieutenant Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) brings Martha into the inquiry. Lieutenant Brady shares with Martha the evidence that police have pieced together, including possessing a cell phone, an odd number of time between her and Eli, and fingerprints in her apartment. She then gives Martha a speech “I’m a good girl too”, trying to get her to admit to killing Eli. What Martha is willing to say is that she prays to stop loving him.
Martha’s love for Eli is suspected to be a jealous boyfriend on her engagement Jacob Albrecht (Luke Slater). Jacob, the son of the church leader, owns Martha’s cell phone and holds fragments of glass in his shoes, consistent with the glass found in Eli’s apartment.
In the region, Martha and Jacob were respectively questioned. Despite her love for Eli, Martha revealed that she would not be able to survive without Jacob, her church and her community. If people discover her infidelity, they will avoid her and leave her without the skills to survive in the Ellie world.
Lieutenant Brady concluded that Martha felt intimate about Jacob. Therefore, the police decided to play a mini-game with Martha and Jacob, and observe them using the one-way mirror in the interrogation room. Lieutenant Brady explained that police intend to arrest Marcus Wright.

Martha knows that Marcus Wright is innocent. Jacob asks Martha if she is in love with Eli if it is true. Then he hurriedly confessed, “You are leaving me. Leave the church. I lost my mind and raised my hand (Eli).” Martha asked, “What should we do?” Jacob replied, “Let’s pray.” .” Jacob was arrested immediately. Later, Jacob’s confession would be abandoned because as a pastor, his conversation with Martha was protected.
At Jacob’s bail hearing, Samantha Moen convinced Judge Arnold Pappas (Tyrone Mitchell Henderson) to put the bail deposit Set at $500,000. Jacob’s community secured his bail by bringing cash, property titles and anything of value.
After the bail hearing, Eli’s mother, Amelia Penner (Laura Heisler), agreed to testify that she saw Jacob’s burning pile in the community sabotages evidence. She eventually violated the agreement. Instead of testifying, she said, “I will not attend this court, nor will anyone in my church.” She said, “I will not judge,” turning to the jury with tears in her face, “You shouldn’t be, either.” . “That’s the truth. So, help me, God!” Ada Nolan Price thought if these actions were churches going around the van or blocking justice the church.
The District Attorney’s Office knew that the case was weak without Jacob’s confession and Mrs. Penner’s testimony. Jacob’s lawyer Patricia Kaplan (Selenis Leyva), his fathers John Albrecht (Michael Devine) and Da Baxter met with Suzanne Forrester’s alternative judicial plan. Albrecht explains how their communities trust their own judicial justice because “God is the court.” Albrecht suggested Jacob could do carpentry work in the community and provide financial compensation to Eli’s parents.
Baxter’s solution to this balk around. The restoration of justice program never provides another outcome for murder. Forrester mocked Baxter for rejecting the proposed alternative, telling him that it was his chance to “save the face” because Jacob would be acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Baxter directed Price and Maroun to provide better evidence for Jacob’s conviction. Eli paid Martha to visit the women’s clinic and get prenatal vitamins. She is pregnant. Price’s conflict on how to use this new knowledge, sits down to discuss Jacob’s fate, if convicted. He tells the story of a man who was convicted of involuntary homicide. It’s a bar fight. According to Price, the man was stabbed in the fight. Baxter provides cliches about the justice system. It is “flawed,” he said, “allows us to operate in an upright way” and “provides equal justice under the law. Price’s character is atypical, and he cynically asks Baxter ): “Do you really believe it? Luckily, Baxter said: “Most days. “The price remains doubtful until Baxter reminded him that the victim left Baylor Church to practice the law in our church – “Let us be honored!” ”

Ada Maorn attempts to use Martha’s pregnancy to force her to testify. Martha flashes her wedding ring and points out that she has been deceived but never again. Jacob’s love for Martha and his desire to protect his unborn child made him accept the plea. He pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter with a mandatory 15-year sentence. Jacob truly regrets his sentencing, apologizes to Ellie’s family and announces his love for Martha. Neither the price nor the Maroun felt good 15 years in prison. They stared at the plaque of “The God We Trust” in the courtroom, questioning God, love and justice.
I like to say I received my law degree from Dick Wolfe’s Law School and Order. I praise plots like “We Trust in God” because the story is bold, intellectually stimulating, wonderful. This is not entertainment without entertainment, but an exploration of the human condition, which runs contrary to the community bound by faith and is tested by the complexity of love and justice. I’m there alone, and I hope you too.
Have you seen it? Is there justice? Let me know in the comments!
