The story begins with detectives Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) and Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks), investigating the strangulation death of a young woman, Kaitlyn Lawson (Siobhan McGroarty). During the hearing, expert witness Dr. Amina Robinson demonstrated that the effects of prolonged sexual and emotional abuse may have had an impact on Michelle Burns. Michelle’s uncle had sexually victimized her when she was 9 years old. Dr. Mankin noted that victims of sexual abuse are six times more likely to choose to abuse their partners. She further explained that this type of separation disorder can cause abusers to mix abuse with love, thus preventing Michelle from protecting her daughter because she prioritizes her husband. Nevertheless, the judge forbids the introduction of Michelle’s history of abuse at trial, especially her “mentality”.
During Michelle’s trial, she cried and said, “I made a mistake.” Ada Price proposed a movie about child abuse, prompting Michelle to make Michelle Sher admits that the child in that movie is dead. Price claims Michelle announced that because she made the film, Michelle knew she told her husband about the risks of Kaitlyn, the video she planned to release. He also reminded the jury that Michelle issued bail and collaborated to create false cases for her husband.

Outside the court, Samantha faces Nolan and says using Michelle’s art is wrong for her. Nolan tried to dismiss her concerns by saying “agree or not,” but Samantha said, “No!” She explained that she consulted the victim about the psychological effects of abuse and the death of her sister from the abuser. Her attitude toward how they prosecuted the case made her conflicted. Price brought Samantha’s attention to Baxter, who thought it was time to listen rather than tell Samantha. Ultimately, Price notified the judge of plea agreement and sentencing recommendations. Michelle Burns agreed to serve in prison for one year and had three years of supervision after release. Samantha told Price: “Thank you for hearing me.”
Samantha’s brave commitment to protect Michelle as a victim contrasts with Michelle’s failure to protect her daughter, the plot of “protection” “obligation” shows women Empowerment.
