One of the biggest flops at the box office this year was Lionsgate’s big screen adaptation Borderlands. After a dismal $9 million opening weekend, the film ended the month with $31 million.
The film had a production budget of $115 million and a marketing campaign of $30 million, and the studio reportedly lost about $114 million on the film.
CEO of Lionsgate Films Jon Feltheimer The film’s failure was recently discussed, citing it as the studio’s biggest financial loss.
He said: “Across our Television Group, our unscripted business is feeling the impact of the ongoing market correction.
“Our film group has poor box office performance. BorderlandsThat, coupled with other earnings releases for the quarter that came in below expectations, reflects the current environment where the margin of error is smaller than ever.
He went on to explain: “Almost everything that could go wrong did go wrong: It was put on hold for too long during the pandemic, reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safe zone of our typically rigid financial models.
“Several of our other releases during the quarter, while cushioned by financial models that worked as expected, did not meet our standards or forecasts.”
There are many reasons Borderlands Being bombarded, the first mistake a studio makes is recruiting Eli Roth to command it. Ultimately the film is lifeless, just a paint-by-numbers movie with nothing interesting or unique about it.
No amount of star power can save a poorly made movie.
