The arrival of her daughter Clarity is a transformative experience that shapes not only her maturity but also her perspective on life. As Kash Doll balances motherhood with a thriving career, she reflects on her journey and uses the album as a powerful expression of her personal and artistic growth.
We had a few rounds with rappers Mario Kart while discussing the inspiration behind her album, tour, her love for her children, and more.
Congratulations the last doll! What inspired the title?
It’s just growth. This is where I am in life, you know what I’m saying? So, I’m just tired of this doll. I have two children. I don’t want to be called a doll anymore. I just finished it.
You dropped “Doll” so your new name is just Cash?
I don’t know yet.
Do you have any ideas for your new name?
I don’t know yet. I don’t know if I just want to be Keisha because that’s my name, or if I want to be Kash, or Big Kash, or KD, or something like that.
When your fans listen to your new album the last doll How do you want them to feel? What message do you want to convey?
You know, I feel like it’s not a job anymore. It’s just a singleton in a project, you know what I’m saying?
Mine is just a collection of pieces that I want them to see grow and evolve. Like, I’ve been in this game for 10 years, so I just want the fans that grew up with me to understand who I am and where I am now, you know what I’m saying?
Congratulations on the 10th anniversary. So, this album is just about growing up?
This is growth. But it’s already lit. This album is crazy. I’m going to be 100 percent authentic – like, this is crazy. I have all types of songs there. There were songs in there about my kids, you know, and I was right there singing. I felt a different vibe there, you know what I’m saying? It’s not just rap; it’s a different genre. I had house music there. I have some songs about mental health and loving yourself and stuff like that. So, it’s just a different me.
What’s your favorite song on the album?
My favorite song? I don’t. It’s hard to have a favorite song when all the songs are hot. It’s hard.
The album features an incredible line-up.
Oh yes, they are. The artists are incredible.
How do you choose your artists?
Once I wrote the song, I could hear certain people’s voices, you know what I’m saying? I reached out and tried to get it done. For “Comfy,” I wanted to do a remake of Lil Wayne and Babyface’s work, so I contacted Tink and I wanted her to be a part of it.
We did it. That’s how it happened. But most importantly my other stuff – oh yeah, and NWA with Yung Bleu – you know, Tracy and I, we decided to hook him up. Then we went out, we got the hook, and we performed our verse and magic.
You mentioned having your children on this album, so I’m assuming this album is very personal to you. What role does motherhood play in your album?
My kids, they just inspire me to make music that I don’t mind them listening to.
Because I make music that I like to listen to when I go out and stuff like that. The music I like to listen to when I’m biking or on vacation, you know? Like, when my kids are in the house and you want to hear a different type of music, and I don’t have to have sensors on everything, you know what I’m saying?
So, they inspire me to make different types of music, even though I’m still her.
Have you ever played this album to your children?
No. Well, Cashton knows his songs.
Is it difficult to juggle motherhood and being a musical artist?
It’s hard to leave them. You know what I mean? it’s difficult. It was hard being away from my kids.
So, have you ever found yourself rushing home after a long day of travel?
yes. yes. I miss them, they’re my kids, man.
You’ve got into your showbiz bag. you’ve already been BMF and Diarra from Detroit. How is acting for you?
The show is fun. I seem to be more stable when I’m acting. You know what I mean? Like, you don’t have to travel a lot and you don’t have to keep losing things when you travel. And, you know, away from my kids, I can be in a state, at least in a state for a month, two months, three, four months, you know? So, I kind of enjoyed it. One thing is for sure, though, it will be longer.
Have you ever written a score for a show or movie?
yes. But my, I’m going to make a movie. I’m going to do that because I’m going to do my baby shit. I want to make music, I don’t want to move around and do so many gigs and stuff like that, you know? I want to be able to sit down and be with my kids. I won’t miss Cashton playing when he starts. So everyone has to wait until he starts school. I would have my fun, go on tour, do all that, but when my kids started school, it was all over.
You’re going on tour soon! What can fans expect from your show?
An experience. This is my first tour. You know, now I have to do my own stage and set up the lighting. You know, I can play all different music. This is my first time. I’m really excited. This is my first tour in ten years. I’m really angry. I shouldn’t have waited so long, but it will be an experience. You will see a doll at work.
Why did you wait 10 years to tour?
I don’t. I had been on tour before in 2019, but I had never done my own tour, and I finally had another tour in 2020, but then COVID happened. Yeah, canceled the whole tour, and then boom, now here we are. So that’s still cool. I want to build my travel business. I’m going to build it. This is cool. I like to start. This is a test. This is torture for me.
Where is your favorite place to perform?
Damn it. That’s hard. Because the bay is an era. Milwaukee is an era. Houston is an era.
You are also known for your fashion, how does fashion influence your music?
I have no idea. I don’t know how that affects it, but I’m just being myself. I’m just being myself. I don’t know what my fashion is like – I don’t know. Am I fashionable? I just put on my clothes.
So, don’t you consider yourself a fashionista?
People say that, but I just say where. I go to the mall every other day. It’s like a little time alone where I go to the mall and look lazy. I wear a hoodie and scarf to the mall. I looked crazy. I’m buying something. Then I’ll put it in my closet for when I’m ready to wear something. Do you know? But I do like fashion. I love all these things. I just, I don’t know if I’m good at it. But no, it doesn’t, it doesn’t affect my music.
I’m just me. I don’t know what it is about me, people who try to talk trash. I’d say, okay, I’ve got something for you. my children.
What advice do you have for upcoming female rappers?
First of all, I say, be yourself. You know, everyone else was taken away. Be yourself. Well, have morals and dignity in the game. Do you know what I’m talking about? Don’t just do anything. Don’t be too thirsty or you’ll drink poison. Because some people want it so bad, they’ll sign the document. This is me. I am human.
You’re going to sign the document, you know what I’m saying? No lawyer, no idea what happened and all that stuff. Just know that if this is for you, it will happen no matter what. Don’t just despair about this thing. Be yourself. That’s what I’m saying because I wish you’d said that to me sooner, but I don’t know if I would have listened because experience teaches you something very different than what other people tell you, you know what I mean?
Yes. That’s interesting. I interviewed Ja Rule two weeks ago. He said the same thing: “Be yourself.” Do you feel like there’s a lack of authenticity among some people in the industry right now?
Yes. Because they want to do what they think is popular right now or, you know, what they think everyone would like to do.
But at the same time, it’s like, just be yourself and your time will come. Just be yourself. This is me. That’s why I stay in my lane and I just be myself because my time is coming. If God wants me to have time, you know what I’m saying? I live in my – maybe that’s it. But, no matter what, I am being myself and it feels good.
I was having fun and not just doing what I thought I needed to do to be her, you know, sure, put in the work, but be yourself.
