macta, like miike (One World International)
The following black panther Myke Towers and its deluxe version were both released this year, and the third album “Myke Towers” is a surprise like miike. The 23-song album was released on Christmas Eve (in honor of his idol Michael Jordan) and is a gift to his loyal fans who have supported him since his Soundcloud days more than 10 years ago. The album marks a return to his roots: trap and rap.
like miike Kicking off with the Eladio Carrion-assisted “Qué Quieres De Mi?” He asks the haters, “What do you want from me?” In the song, the two Puerto Rican stars dish out that they are leaders, are authentic, and don’t rely on anyone to create their hits. He teams up with Venezuelan rapper Acapella to show off all their blessings on “Brillo,” an ’80s-style, funk-infused hip-hop song. While the entire album is entirely trap and hip-hop, with some R&B overtones, Towers also drops in an experimental track with Argentinian artist L-Gante. “Los Depuro” is an innovative fusion of cumbia RKT and reggaeton music.
The album was shot by 23 visual artists in Towers’ hometown of San Juan Quintana and features collaborations with Jon Z, Miky Woodz, Clarent, Pressure 9×19 and Neutro Shorty. — Jessica Royds
Bad Bunny, “Pitorro de Coco” (Rimas Entertainment)
With festive joy and heartache, “Pitorro de Coco” offers a unique blend of holiday spirit and introspection. Named after the festive coconut rum, the song encapsulates Caribbean Christmas through a celebratory yet sober lens of Puerto Rican culture, paired with contemporary beats from producers MAG, Tainy and La Paciencia, and produced by Benito Created by myself. The addition of the music of Chuíto el de Bayamón, born in 1900, helps bridge the generation gap, bringing the earthy charm of jíbara music from his hometown to the global Latin pop scene. ——Isabella Legoza
Hamilton and Andy Alaska, “Sweet Kiss” (Cigol Music Group)
Emerging artists from Cartagena, Colombia, Hamilton and DJ Andy Alaska combine their talents on the single “Besitos Dulces”. Based on African rhythms with melodic and romantic overtones, Hamilton delivers a warm interpretation of the girl he’s interested in, directly confessing his love to the girl he’s interested in, inviting her to put aside her excuses and surrender to her desire to be together. The production enriches the song with an all-encompassing rhythm that combines Afro-Caribbean rhythms with subtle details that emphasize the lyrical narrative and invite you to let yourself be enchanted by the music. — Louisa Kahler
