The Beastie Boys may claim to “no sleep until Brooklyn,” but Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale recently admitted that may also extend to Tool concerts in Pennsylvania.
talking guitarist Recently, Hale opened up in the magazine about ten records that changed her life, focusing specifically on the impact of albums by artists like Black Sabbath, Jeff Buckley, Alice Cooper and even Henson.
Another artist she follows is Tool, whose 2001 album Lateral muscles Halestorm was co-founded by her and her brother Arejay about four years after its founding. The record was a major success for Metallica, placing them at the top of the Billboard 200 for three consecutive years and earning them a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the lead single “Schism.”
For Hale, however, the record represents a humorous memory dating back to Tool’s September 2001 performance in Philadelphia.
“My brother Arejay plays the drums really well,” Hale told the publication. “He learned Tool’s song ‘Schism’ from the radio, so I thought I’d give him the whole album for his birthday. We just devoured it. I ended up getting really into it myself. Just listening to their music is amazing. Like watching a horror movie.
“I had a crappy waitressing job, and I bought us tickets to see Tool in Hersheypark. I was so excited. Then Allej did something that pissed off our parents, so they wouldn’t let him go. . I thought, okay, this might be an opportunity to ask someone out on a date, and I did it. I asked Nate this guy, and I was like, honey! But it didn’t matter – the show was great and I was singing every word. Halfway through, I looked over at my date and realized he was asleep – which was totally devastating to me. In a strange way, tools Lateral muscles Changed my life. My brother still teases me about it: “I just wouldn’t fall asleep.”
Although Halestorm has yet to garner support for a band like Tool, the two groups have performed with the same lineup from time to time, which has certainly sparked a lot of sly banter between the Hale brothers.
