“I grew up loving music but I wasn’t especially, precociously talented at anything,” Maisie Peters tells Apple Music. “I really firmly believe that I taught myself because I just love it so much.” That process began in her early teens, when the singer-songwriter borrowed a friend’s guitar and started experimenting, writing “really imaginative” songs that transported her out of the small town near Brighton, South England, where she was raised. Listen to her music now, and it’s hard to believe Peters wasn’t always just naturally gifted. Her irresistible, intimate pop features bittersweet melodies, a close-friend vocal style, and lyrics so sharply relatable they often feel like you’re being punched in the gut. All of which has won her fans in Taylor Swift (whose influence she wears like a badge of honor in her music) and Ed Sheeran, who signed her to his record company Gingerbread Man in 2021. He joins Peters in her Up Next film to herald her as “the voice of this generation” as the singer contemplates her dizzying rise so far. And, in an interview with Apple Music 1’s Brooke Reese, Peters opens up about her long-awaited debut album ‘You Signed Up for This,’ the “chaotic time” of working on it alongside the soundtrack she wrote for the second season of Apple TV+ comedy ‘Trying,’ and writing some of the album’s songs with Sheeran. “I’m proud of the fact I’ve managed to not only create this album that I love, but also do it on my own terms,” she adds.
