If there’s anything to be grateful for in the first half of Matlock’s first season, it’s that the show’s most intense characters are finally relaxing. I would definitely love that injured Sarah Franklin.
After one too many episodes on Olympia’s ass so she could check the top lawyer for cavities, Kira shows up, sending Sarah into a whirlwind crush.
Normally, a supporting character might not have that much of an impact on the story, unless most of her scenes in Matlock are with the eponymous character himself.
I think it’s safe to say that almost every viewer is ready for Sarah to loosen her grip on anything she can get her hands on.
This is largely thanks to the introduction of Kira.
It may be a cliché and overused trope, but sometimes, the opposite does have appeal.
Piper Curda’s Kira Yu made her debut on Matlock Season 1 Episode 5 with the flair and confidence of a woman who knows what she wants.
As soon as Sarah saw Kira, it was like seeing a heart-shaped balloon filled with Sarah’s obvious loneliness.
It feels cliché to say she “came in like a wrecking ball,” but I really can’t think of a more accurate way to describe this encounter.
So, as a hopeless romantic who seems buried under Sarah’s suit, the character creates a detailed spreadsheet of her plans to “attract” Kira to her.
It’s no secret that the key to lasting love is a detailed strategy for marking each key moment. Spontaneity be damned.
Thankfully, the writers of Matlock had other plans for the whole “opposites attract” formula. However, it may have worked a little too well, potentially leaving viewers with a little more heartbreak in the series.
Matlock’s writers have proven they’re not afraid to ruin any of their characters’ relationships
As we know from the events leading up to the winter break, no one’s relationship is safe on Matlock.
First, Billy and Claudia went to Splitville. Then there’s Julian (Jason Ritter), who confesses to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) about his relationship from years ago, just when they’re finally ready to patch things up and rediscover their love.
There aren’t many relationships left for the writers to play with. Plus, the people behind the show won’t touch Marty and Edwin’s lifelong marriage.
They could, but the possibility was too emotional to contemplate. There’s really only one thing that can cause a septuagenarian couple to break up, if you know what I mean.
This leaves Kira and Sarah’s romance in a budding state, and unless Kira can stick around for a while, we probably shouldn’t get too attached.
If there’s one thing every Matlock fan knows by now, it’s to expect the unexpected
However, one of the best parts of “Matlock” is that it continually exceeds its audience’s expectations. It’s like the writers asked me to reap the consequences, and I’m here for it.
Also, I’m pretty sure Jacobson Moore can only play one heartbroken character at a time, a role currently filled by David Del Rio’s lovable Billy.
Personally, I think we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s going to happen with Sarah and Kira. Aside from the office holiday party where they shared their first kiss, they hadn’t even had an official first date.
Can you imagine if they got to the point of meeting each other’s parents? I think the stress on Sarah (Leah Lewis) is actually visible, with question marks floating over her head.
Regardless, these two are so adorable that Matlock’s writers didn’t do enough planning before the relationship potentially ended.
