2024 body horror movies substance It’s a satire of the scene. There is, of course, more than one scene in this masterpiece of vanity and selfishness, but it is only in this scene that the irony arises.
The last one.
The final act looks at the world of glamor and body horror. Then it devolved into a complete farce.
story
Elizabeth Sparkle is a star who has lived through her glory days. substance Uses some wonderful montages with her stars on the sidewalk to show the passage of time and destruction. She is past her prime and can only do fitness shows on TV. *Think Jane Fonda in the 1980s.
Elizabeth was fired from the show she hosted due to declining ratings. She discovers the substance and chooses a younger version of herself.
Things spiral out of control as her younger self takes over.
main actors
Demi Moore – Elizabeth
Margaret Qualley as Sue
Dennis Quaid as Harvey
*A quick side note about Quaid: He seems to be involved in everything at the moment. Indeed, this year he is filming a small film in my hometown. His face in the movie is unforgettable, but what about his voice? He came within a foot of me, and I didn’t know it was Quaid until he spoke.
exist substance He chews the scenery like Harvey chews shrimp; mouth open, with delightful aplomb. If he had more screen time, he might have stolen the movie.
behind the camera
Writer-director Coralie Fargeat gives us a fascinating look into the world of celebrity, vanity, and self-absorbed performers. Fajit, who brought us Revenge (a delightfully bloody video version of I Spit on Your Grave), knows how horror works.
Whether she’s delivering the “empowering horror” of the horror genre, or the wonderfully dark comedy of body horror, Fajit can do it all.
dumpling
substance I think it owes a little bit to Guo Chen’s movies dumpling. Ddumpling It’s about an aging actress who has retired from show business and is concerned about her sagging face and growing wrinkles. She also suspected that her wealthy husband was cheating on him with a much younger woman.
She was sent to “Aunt May.” (Mei is played by Bai Ling, who is likable here. This could very well be her ultimate role.) The dumplings in question here are made from fetuses. The protagonist, Mrs. Lee (Miriam Yeung), may be repulsed at first, but she later gets used to her disgust.
Her obsession with healing leads to her undoing.
dumpling Originally appeared in Three Extremes. A collection of short films from three masters of Asian horror. Jackie Chan subsequently remade the film into a feature film.
In Fajit’s and Jackie Chan’s films, vanity and an attitude of being unable to move on lead to disastrous results.
Suspension of disbelief
substance It takes a great deal of skepticism to succeed. Demi Moore’s aged look and lack of sagging isn’t entirely convincing here. Quarry, he’s here once upon a time in hollywoodare all well-behaved, petite and self-centered. Her Sue never feels like “you” to Fred.
This is perhaps the most obvious feature of Elizabeth’s own personality and drive. In other words: Sue has an incredible amount of vanity and self-absorption; the original Elizabeth certainly had these “traits.”
The film’s final act of irony requires us to trust that the audience won’t react immediately with horror to the final version of “You.” This might not be too difficult since Hollywood is full of people who are more focused on their own needs and the world.
Besides, who needs to pay attention to visible monsters when there are so many hidden monsters populating Tinsel Town’s population?
judgment
I have to regretfully give substance Swinging 4 stars out of 5. dumplingAnyway, to me, it’s more scary and believable. This dark comedy horror film would have benefited greatly if Demi had looked older from the beginning.
And a little bit of Dennis Quaid.
substance Currently streaming on MUBI. Despite my inconsistent scores, it was a real treat. There are moments that will give you chills. Go check it out and see what you think.
