We have good news and bad news for Billy the Kid fans.
First the good: Young Henry McCarty and his band of outlaws will be back for round three of mugging and shootouts.
But the bad news is, this will be Billy’s last stop.
Yes, MGM announced today that Billy the Kid has been renewed for a third and final season.
“MGM+ has announced the renewal of Billy the Kid starring Tom Bryce (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Snake”) for a third and final eight-episode season,” a press release issued not long ago wrote.
“The epic romantic adventure inspired by the life of America’s most notorious outlaw continues in Season 3.”
The statement went on to summarize the future for Billy and other survivors of the Lincoln County War:
“The Lincoln County War may be officially over, but Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett both have important issues to solve—and a reckoning is coming. Billy is still on the run, and Garrett is out to get him, no matter who he is. Dead or alive.
“With the bounty on his head, Billy has the opportunity to leave New Mexico entirely and pursue a future with the love of his life, Dulcinea. But he has unfinished business with Garrett, who betrayed him, and decides to stay.
Meanwhile, Billy’s long-time friend, rival and enemy Jesse Evans remains in Lincoln, looking for a new purpose and perhaps redemption.
“As the final chapter of the saga draws to a close, Billy will fight tooth and nail to try and finally find the justice that has eluded him for so long, even if it means dying for it.
“In season two, Michael Hirst, Donald Delane, Tom Bryce and the rest of our talented cast captivate viewers through the dramatic events leading up to the infamous Lincoln County War, during which Billy struggled to keep his His soul and the love of his life,” added MGM+ head Michael Wright.
“In Season 3, we’re excited to bring the naturally cinematic story of one of the most fascinating and often misunderstood characters in American history to a conclusion that only MGM+ can do.”
“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to write the third and final season of Billy the Kid and bring this fascinating saga to a close,” Hearst continued.
“Billy was known for many things, not least his ability to escape seemingly impossible situations. But now, as America’s most wanted fugitive, the odds were against him.
We guess no one expected a show about Billy the Kid (who was shot to death at age 21) to last more than a dozen seasons.
But cancellation news is always a little sad, and it’s not like this is a series that doesn’t seem to be out of story ideas.
I hope that the third season of “Billy the Kid” can have a satisfying ending.
