“Paper Planes” reigns supreme 16 years after the song was first released, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in September 2008.
Its rise in December 2024 has been linked to the dance trend, and Diplo (one of the song’s producers/writers) uploaded a review last week noting the tune’s resurgence.
According to data from Luminate, in the week ending December 19, the official playback volume of “Paper Planes” in the United States reached 4.4 million, an increase of 19%. It improves to 10-9 on Hot Alternative Songs and debuts at No. 20 on Alternative Streaming Songs.
“Paper Planes” occupies the top five spots on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, which includes songs that have reached this level before, with four of the five even reaching No. 1 at some point. Fifth place is “Like Him” by Tyler, the Creator (collaborated with Lola Young), which returns to its peak and ranks third.
Two songs reached the top ten, one of which was in the top ten for the first time. First up is Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” zoomed to 20-7. Another new top 10 entry — a newcomer in this case — is Ceechnyaa’s “Peggy,” which jumps to 18-9 in its second week in the rankings. The British rapper’s latest single, released on December 5, has gone viral for its crude lyrical content, with some of the best-performing TikTok uploads being reaction videos and lip-sync clips.
“Peggy” had 3.1 million views in the week ending December 19, a 63% increase, although the TikTok Billboard Top 50 is its only chart appearance to date.
