we recently learned Mike Flanagan Another one is being developed Stephen King project adapted from the eight-episode series Carrie Amazon Prime Video.
Carrie It tells the story of Kelly White, a shy and awkward high school girl who is relentlessly bullied by her classmates and tormented by her fanatically religious mother, Margaret.
As Carrie goes through this and feels isolated and misunderstood, she discovers that she has telekinesis.
When a cruel prank is played on her at a school dance, Carrie is furious, unleashing her pent-up rage and using her powers to exact devastating and deadly revenge on her tormentors and the town.
The story’s climactic ball scene is undoubtedly one of the most iconic scenes in horror literature and film.
The story has been adapted several times, and when asked in an interview with CinemaBlend why it was told again, Flanagan said:
“When it was first put on the table, one of the only questions I had was ‘Why?’ and if I couldn’t answer ‘Why do this again?’ for myself, then there was no point in continuing with it. Yes. It’s the same muscle.
“I would say it’s the same feeling I had watching The Turn of the Screw, which has been adapted dozens of times. It’s like, ‘Okay, how do we do this in a completely different way? ?
When asked what Stephen King thought of retelling the story again, Flanagan said, “His first question was mine as well. … Steve’s first reaction was, ‘Why even more? Do this?
Well, the filmmakers had a direction and he wanted the story to not retread anything that had come before. Teasing the project, he said:
“I can’t undermine our approach to ‘Carrie’ just to reassure people that we’re not retelling the same story. It’s definitely a new approach to material that Stephen King is excited about, and that’s important to me. Speaking is also important.
When it comes to how he won over King’s enthusiasm, he said he wouldn’t have done it if he hadn’t gotten King excited about it.
“It was done, and it was done beautifully, so to speak, DePalma did it perfectly, and then it was done again for ‘reasons.’ Why do it now?
“So when he reviewed my proposal for this, his reaction was, oh, this is actually very exciting for him. And I said, ‘Well, if he’s excited, then we should be Do. But otherwise I wouldn’t do it… It would be a really nice surprise for the fans.
I thought it would be a contemporary version of the story, and while teasing his original thoughts on the project, Flanagan told MovieWeb:
“Carrie White walking through the metal detector was interesting to me. Carrie White and social media. The iconic scene in the locker room was so different when people had cellphones in their hands.
“So this was the first germ of an idea that was, like, there was actually a lot to be said for this idea that was very relatable. I can’t spoil what we did to find a story that felt like it needed to be told. Changes. But we made some pretty significant changes.
Flanagan is a fantastic storyteller and a filmmaker with an understanding of King’s work that many filmmakers don’t have, and I’m excited to see him bring this story to life What was the vision for this story as a series.
