Miley Cyrus has opened up about one of her most controversial live performances.
While chatting with her sister Brandi Cyrus on Spotify’s Billions Club series, the 32-year-old pop superstar shared the story behind her infamous “Party in the U.S.” performance, when she 16, on stage with a pole attached to an ice cream truck.

“Party in the USA” appeared on Miley’s 2009 EP, time of our livespeaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
While the pole dancing move drew backlash from critics, who felt it was a poor choice for the then 16-year-old girl Hannah Montana Considering her young fan base, Miley revealed that this performance stood out to her for another reason.
“What I remember most about that performance is that it was the first time I wore real diamond jewelry on stage,” she told Brandy. “So you guys remember the old ice cream truck, but I remember the diamonds.”
This isn’t the first time Miley has spoken about her live debut “Party in the USA” at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards. In a “Once Young” TikTok video last year, the singer explained that the pole was actually used for “stabilization.”
“My mom said, ‘I think it would be cool if she was in a trailer park because that’s where we really come from,'” Miley said, jokingly imitating Tish. “So, obviously I’m dancing on an ice cream truck with a stripper pole, but it’s not a stripper pole, it’s really just for stability. And I’m wearing high heels! Like what do you want from me?” she added. ” Do I really want to dance on the roof of an ice cream truck and not perform? “
