TV fanatics are familiar with hearing the news that a popular TV show is getting a spinoff. In the NCIS universe, this happens all the time. But NCIS: Origins is different.
This NCIS: Origins cast and character guide will introduce all of the new NIS agents and key team members introduced at the beginning of Gibbs’ career.
The show begins with a full crew and a new location. When Gibbs returns, he will be decades younger and a newbie just starting his NCIS career. We finally get to see what makes Gibbs, well, Gibbs.
NCIS: Origins Cast and Character Guide
Another spin-off from NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Origins will introduce new characters who created the Gibbs we all know and love.
We’re going back to where we started, before there were cell phones to track and computers could give you real-time information with just a few mouse clicks.
Take a look at the faces we’ll get to know as important to new NCIS agent Leroy “Jethro” Gibbs.
NIS Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs – Austin Stowell
For nearly two decades, we’ve grown to love Gibbs, the mature and experienced retired NCIS agent played by Mark Harmon.
But Origins will give us a young and impressionable Jethro, Austin Stowell, who began his career in a small NCIS office in 1991. His life, but he won’t appear on camera.
We’ll see Gibbs in the NIS offices at Camp Pendleton as a baby-faced newcomer to the team, under the tutelage of mentor and future best friend Mike Franks.
After leaving the Army, he found his place in the National Intelligence Service, having just returned from Desert Storm, losing his wife and young daughter, and who would endure the pain of trauma.
Stowell landed his first regular role in The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Since then, he has appeared in several notable films, including Bad Behavior, Dolphin Tale 1 & 2, 12 Strong, and The Hate Game.
NIS Agent Mike Franks as Kyle Schmid
In the original NCIS series, Texan Mike Franks (Muse Watson) was Gibbs’ consigliere and best friend.
In NCIS: Origins, Gibbs has just met his boss, Franks, and they have yet to form a strong bond of friendship.
Kyle Schmid will play young Franks, a man with a perfect mustache and cowboy boots who joins a ragtag group of NIS agents as they develop their NCIS franchise. Branched out and made a name for themselves.
Franks was already a legend in the NIS world before he became the leader of a diverse team of young agents that would make NCIS a formidable agency.
Schmid is known for several series, including Copper, Six, Bloodline and Humans. He has also appeared in films such as “The Pacifier,” “Fire Nation,” “The Cheetah Girls,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” “Covenant” and “See Red.”
Agent Vera Strickland – Diana Rodriguez
NCIS fans have seen modern-day Vera throughout Gibbs’ career, and we’re going back to the beginning of Origins.
Agent Vera Strickland is a tough, sharp-witted agent from Brooklyn who is disaffected and willing to speak her mind, regardless of feelings.
Her entire career has involved dealing with misogynistic sexists who underestimated her abilities because of her gender. But when they come looking for her, she’s more than willing to fight them.
You may recognize her from Suicide Squad, The Blacklist, and Twisted Metal.
She has had solo appearances on shows like The Equalizer, FBI: Most Wanted, New Amsterdam, and Law & Order: Organized Crime.
Detective Granville Dawson – Daniel Bellomy
Another official member of the NIS team led by Franks and supervised by Walker was Special Agent Granville Dawson, nicknamed “Grandma” or “Probie” (short for Probationary Officer).
We’ll see the beginnings of Dawson’s career as he works as an assistant to the evidence custodian and aspires to be promoted to field agent and join Mike’s team.
Like Dawson, Daniel Bellome is in the beginning stages of his career, having starred in Freak Show, Suits, Blue Bloods, The Good Fight, F.B.I. He has played small roles in other works, and “Book of Thrones II: Ghost” was his only recurring role in four years.
SA Benjamin Randolph (aka Randy) would become the NIS agency’s golden boy. It’s hard not to love and respect the father of twins, who uses this to his advantage.
As young Gibbs adjusts to his new life, he’ll teach him the ins and outs of being a federal agent.
Ford has appeared in shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “American Horror Story,” “American Crime Story,” “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “Magnum PI.” He has played multiple roles in “Born for Love”.
Agent Lara Dominguez – Mariel Molino
Agent Lala Dominguez is a former Marine who has a like-minded relationship with Gibbs at the National Intelligence Agency.
Her dark sense of humor and sharp skills will come in handy in her investigative work.
Molino appeared in 98 episodes of the foreign TV series “Papis Muy Padres” and 12 episodes of “La Negociadora”, and had recurring roles in “The Promised Land” and “The Watchful Eye”.
Field Operations Support Officer Mary Jo (Tyla Abercrumbie)
Mary Jo is the National Intelligence Service (NIS) Field Operations Support Officer, although she calls herself HSIC (Hong Kong Chief Secretary).
Tyra Abercrombie will be the glue that keeps the DNI Camp Pendleton office running smoothly on numerous cases, serving as a protective mama bear to everyone around her.
She is also a know-it-all lady who keeps everyone’s secrets and protects the details of everything that goes on in her lair.
Abercrumbie has had recurring roles on The Poker House, Empire, Chicago Med, Proven Innocent, Chicago PD, and The Chi.
Chief Medical Examiner Kai Blackrock – Julian Black Antelope
Kai Blackrock, chief medical examiner for the San Diego County Medical Malpractice Office, will assist the team in disposing of the body.
Although Blackstone is at the peak of his career, he retains an emotional connection that draws him into the purview of the official investigation and forces him to face his inner demons.
We’ve seen Impala in previous productions such as The Flash, Grendel and the Hulu original movie Prey, in which he plays Chief Kohtu, leader of a Comanche band.
Later in 2024, he will have a second recurring role on another Hulu production, Washington Black.
Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Lenora Friedman – Lori Petty
BlackRock is being positioned as the next Ducky and Palmer, who will handle NIS cases with the help of associate Dr. Lenora Friedman.
Actress Lori Petty has been around since the 1980s, best known for her roles in Tank Girl and Orange Is the New Black.
She also starred opposite 90s comedian Pauley Shore in “In the Army Now” and Genna Davis in “A League of Their Own.”
Agent in Charge of National Intelligence Cliff Walker-Patrick Fischler
The original NCIS team was left with Director Vance playing politics and clearing the way for agents to do their jobs, while Franks and his NIS team were left with Agent Cliff Walker.
Walker believed in his team and the agency even though he was largely unknown among law enforcement agencies.
We’ll see him regularly put his career on the line to step into larger institutions and enhance NIS Pendleton’s reputation.
Fischler has an impressive slate of films and TV series under his belt during his career. He has appeared in recurring series such as “Nash Bridges,” “Lost,” “Once Upon a Time” and “Twin Peaks.”
He has also appeared in numerous films and dozens of one-episode series. Even if you don’t recognize his name, you will recognize the face.
Chief Forensic Analyst Woody Browne – Bobby Moynihan
Lead Analyst Woody Browne will be in charge of the NIS team’s forensic work, which is completely different from the lab analysis we’re used to seeing on NCIS.
Moynihan has been everywhere in his extensive career, including animated films like “Inside Out,” “IF” and “Cam Island.”
He was also a regular guest on “Saturday Night Live” from 2008 to 2017.
Jackson Gibbs – Robert Taylor
We’ve seen Gibbs multiple times in the NCIS series with his father, played by actor Ralph Waite, best known for his role in the “The Waltons” series John Senior.
In the NCIS: Origins series, we’ll see young Jackson Gibbs try to help his son come to terms with all the struggles life throws at him.
Australian actor Robert Taylor, best known for playing Sheriff Longmire in the series of the same name, will play a recurring role in the early Gibbs series.
Join NCIS: Origins and learn it from the beginning
Gibbs starred on NCIS for nineteen seasons, and fans love joining his fan club.
While we’re fascinated by how jaded and grumpy he became, it would be an interesting journey back in time to see where it all began.
Hopefully we’ll get to see how Gibbs gets started with his infamous rules and head pats. Knowing that we’re quickly recovering from all the trauma he’s been through makes this fan wish we could see Gibbs trying to cope in the throes of emotion.
