It’s almost time to head back to coastal North Carolina!
Variety reports today that Netflix is developing a One Tree Hill sequel series.
The surprising news comes more than 12 years after the original show ended its nine-season run on The WB and The CW.
Sources say the sequel will be produced by One Tree Hill stars Sophia Busch, Hilary Burton and Daniel Ackles.
Ackles will executive produce as part of Chaos Machine, the company she co-owns with husband Jensen Ackles.
Warner Bros. Television, which produced the original series, will also be involved in producing the sequel.
It’s unclear if other series stars like Chad Michael Murray and James Rafferty will be involved in any way.
Variety confirms that Busch and Burton plan to reprise their original roles.
According to the outlet, Ackles is “in talks” to return to the Netflix series as an actor.
Somewhat confusingly, she’s producing, but it’s not yet confirmed if she’ll also star in the series.
We think this is just another sign that pre-production is still in its early stages.
Regardless, details are very scarce at the moment, but One Tree Hill fan corners of social media are already very excited.
The show developed a cult following during its original run, so news of a sequel isn’t entirely shocking despite the years that have passed since it last aired.
While OTH always received mixed reviews, it has since received somewhat of a critical reappraisal.
Entertainment Weekly recently named the show one of the greatest teen dramas of all time, with many outlets praising the show’s performances and overall character development.
So here’s hoping the upcoming sequel can recapture that magic.
It may be a while before we get concrete news about the cast or release date, but we’ll keep you posted as new information becomes available.
