2023 production night shift It’s old-school horror and, to a certain extent, black comedy. To be fair, there are some very funny moments in this fledgling film. Directed by a Chinese brother, the film deserves a much higher rating than it does on IMDb. Although Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 76% review ranking.

story
Gwen begins her first night on the job in a seedy motel. She later learns from her new friend Alice that the place is haunted. night shift It tells the story of her adventures working alone in the hotel that gave Motel 6 its reputation.
“All Tucked Inn” has rats, has haunted rooms, and the lobby where guests check in is filled with stuffed animals. Among them was a bear whom the permanent manager called “Yogi.” Yogis fall off walls at inconvenient times.

what works
First-time directors Benjamin and Paul Chyna (born in Yarmouth, England) drew from a number of horror films to make this production. they start from identity. Shutter Island even appears here.
A Dose of Vacancy pays clear homage to Psycho . The Chinese brothers managed to pull these “homages” together, if you will, with admirable skill and panache. The film borrows from all of the aforementioned horror films, sometimes generously, sometimes with slight nods, and that loses nothing.
They have a mix of dark comedy and offer a twist that I personally didn’t see coming. This was an excellent first attempt. For a feature film that was rumored to cost around $500,000 to make, the cast, script, and atmosphere are all excellent.
$500,000 isn’t quite “low/no budget,” but now, it’s pretty close.
The movie is satisfyingly scary, and this twist is the icing on the metaphorical cake.

This award-winning film* won the Best Genre Award at the 2023 Mammoth Film Festival. An Emmy Award-winning actor guest-starred in the opening and closing scenes (we’re talking about Lamorne Morris here, who won the Outstanding Supporting Actor award for Fargo). I watched that season and, without a doubt, he Worth the season. night shift Was a low budget surprise. The show is airing on Starz.
