Movie review:
- ZC: This early Jim Carrey work combined vampire fashion with typical 1980s sex comedy to create a fun but silly vampire farce. Lauren Hutton plays the blood-sucking vampire, while Cleavon Little plays a fiery gay variant of the Renfield archetype, and her Countess is overtly sexy.
Carey plays this piece more directly. No crazy Ace Ventura antics here. When he realizes what’s happened to him, he transforms from typical “teen” to brooding, anxious vampire, punctuated by moments of manic comedy. As with many ’80s comedies, the climax includes a choreographed dance and an old-fashioned chase scene through a vampire’s house. While “Once Bitten” is certainly not the deepest or most innovative movie you’ll ever see, it’s a fun comedy that showcases its star’s talents in a delightful ’80s cheeseball way. - Andre Gonzalez: Nice movie, but I could live without the singing. Other than that, this is a pretty good movie. Vampires need virgin blood to stay young.
