Last week I directed a short film which will be the last short project I complete before my upcoming feature film later this year. The film, called “Starlet,” tells the story of a young Hollywood actress’ pursuit of fame.
The film itself will be edited and released online in the coming weeks (stay tuned!), and will then be submitted to film festivals that do not require premiere status. In the past, I’ve often waited to release my films online until they premiered at film festivals, but due to the nature of this project, I felt it was best to get it done and get it out to the world as quickly as possible.
Many times, readers of this blog ask me to post behind-the-scenes photos and videos of my shoots, and this is the first time I’ve actually been able to do that. Thanks to Christian Hubbard, the Los Angeles-based filmmaker who shot the BTS material, I was able to edit behind-the-scenes footage consisting entirely of original camera footage.
This video isn’t overly produced or edited and gives a true behind-the-scenes look at my youngest shoot. As you can see in the film, our entire cast and crew was small – only 8 people. Two of them are our actors, and one of them is my wife, Jean, who produced the production with me. I almost always prefer to work with the smallest team possible, even if it means we all need to wear multiple hats. It helps us get through the day faster and leaves us room to improvise and stay agile.
Using the excellent Varicam LT (generously loaned to us by Panasonic) also made the day go by quickly, as this camera is great for run and gun style shooting.
Over the next few weeks I will go into more detail about this project and my thoughts on using the Varicam LT as the film prepares for release.
For now, though, you can check out the original behind-the-scenes clip below:
