Paul McCartney brought extra festive cheer to Manchester over the weekend with a rare performance of his beloved seasonal hit ‘What a Wonderful Christmas’.
Fans on the Co-Op Live stage on Saturday (December 14) were treated to a festive surprise during McCartney’s ongoing Got Back tour, a moment that hadn’t been seen live in six years.
The 82-year-old music legend transformed the stage into a winter wonderland alongside children from the You Should Be Dancing drama school. This performance is particularly special because McCartney has only played “Wonderful Christmas” live about a dozen times in his long solo career.
The last time a live version was brought to fans was during a series of shows in England in December 2018, and before that at a show in December 2016. tonight show.
“Wonderful Christmastime” was originally released as a standalone single in 1979 and has become a staple of holiday playlists around the world. The song was later included as a bonus track on some of the rock icon’s releases McCartney II album.
The Manchester show is a highlight of McCartney’s current tour, showcasing his extensive work from The Beatles, Wings and solo career. During the three-hour hit-filled show, fans were treated to a mix of deep cuts and iconic hits like “Hey Jude” and “Band on the Run.”
The first hour of the show was filled with early Beatles songs, including a souped-up version of “Drive My Car” and the Motown-inspired “Got to Get You into My Life.”
Last week, “Wonderful Christmastime” reappeared on the Rock Streaming Songs chart at No. 15. The song reached a new peak of No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week ending January 6, 2024, so time will tell whether McCartney will break his own record this time around.
