Brought to us by creator Lauren LeFranc Penguin. In the first episode, it was stunning and different. “Whatever you need,” Vic told Oz, and he meant it. Cobb, fat, scarred and with tortured feet, meant to get ahead. Penguin says Gotham is his target.
story
The Riddler destroys Gotham’s seawall defenses. Much of the city was flooded, and “down” communities suffered alarming losses in their goods. Batman, in a change in the background, is mentioned. He is not of this world now.
Oz is on his way to becoming Gotham’s new king. Carmine Falcone dies and is succeeded by Alberto. Penguin knocks Alberto down and then shoots him.
Oz leaves the scene with the body in his arms and meets Vic, a young gangster.
Penguin start.
Current main cast
Colin Farrow plays Oz.
Renzi Feliz plays Vic.
Cristin Milioti plays Sofia Falcone.
Clancy Brown is Salvatore Maroni.
behind the scenes
Director Craig Zobel gives a fantastic look ahead to the first episode. The Penguins are two sides against the middle. Series creator LeFranc cast Oz as “Yojimbo” or “Joe” in Leone’s tribute film “One Punch.” Penguin is deftly fighting the mob so he can take over.
These shows look great and sound even better. Oz is beaten by Sofia’s muscles, with discordant violin strings in the background. *They originally sounded like the harmonica from Once Upon a Time in the West. Henry Fonda’s villain breathes through the instrument as he dies.
Did Zobel and LeFranc use this to hint at the “death” of the Falcone family?
Colin Farrell knocks this one out of the metaphorical park. The “Fat Suit” makeup and his intense performance as the Penguin are mesmerizing. I admit I’m a fan of Farrell. There must have been fires. *We won’t even mention Total Recall.
Farrell
If it hadn’t been revealed that it was an Irish actor under all those prosthetics, I don’t think we could have guessed. Bruges put Farrell on my radar and I’ve been a fan ever since. The thing is, once you get to know him yes Oz did you know yes he.
Even while wearing heavy makeup, his facial expressions scream Farrell. Don’t believe me? Look him in the eyes. Pure Pharrell fans, those mirrors of the soul don’t lie.
Colin Farrell is on fire this year. Sugar (Apple TV) alone should get him an Emmy nomination. Penguin He should be guaranteed a trophy.
judgment
Penguin Should get more than 5 stars. It captures the darkness of Gotham, and the seedy streets that dominate the city. Batman may well be in the background, but DC’s verse doesn’t need him. Oz is the star here.
Nonetheless, Miloti is a fantastic addition to the story. (Or of course Sophia had to be there, but the casting of this actor was brilliant. The show is streaming on Max.
