It’s hard to believe the Penguins have reached the midpoint of the season.
The first (and possibly only) season of the beloved Max gangster drama comes in at less than eight episodes, which is a bit of a letdown.
But we don’t think you can expect any series to maintain such a breakneck pace forever.
A new trailer for the show’s second season debuted this week at New York Comic Con.
It looks like the alliance between Sofia and Oz will be short-lived.
“So whose power is this city? The Falcons? The Maroonese? Why not us?” Oz asks in voiceover.
“He betrayed me, Falconet’s daughter,” Sofia said of her former driver.
“I wanted Oz to feel pain,” she continued. “I need him to suffer for what he did.”
Yes, while the conflict between Gotham’s top crime families will undoubtedly continue, it looks like the rest of the season will mostly focus on the conflict between Oz and Sofia.
Judging from the scenes of destruction throughout Gotham City, it looks like a battle between these ambitious overlords will take a considerable toll.
Penguin man Colin Farrell himself attended the opening day of this year’s conference.
“Humans want to differentiate themselves until you are special in a way that society deems uncool,” Farrell said of his character.
“He had this sense of being different that was forced upon him, that made him feel different in all these ways. He was always going to lose his mind at some point.
“To gain power is to descend into madness, a product of the pain he experienced throughout his life. A power vacuum is a perfect opportunity to rise. The worst thing you can do is laugh at him.
Well, probably absolutely worst All you can do is violently murder him – which is exactly what Sophia promises to accomplish in the trailer.
As we said before, it’s not easy to keep upping the stakes week after week. But it looks like the Penguins might be able to do it.
There was a time when it was hard to imagine where the show would go next.
Last week’s episode in particular – which focused on Sofia’s time in Arkham Asylum – seems hard to top.
But the promise of an all-out war between two of television’s most compelling characters has us very excited for the second half of the season.
TV fans, what do you think? Can the Penguins continue to outdo themselves?
