Pierce Brosnan felt a personal connection to the story in his new movie the last riflemanin which he portrays a nearly 93-year-old World War II veteran struggling with the pain of his past.
“I thought it was such a heartfelt story and it took me back to a place in Ireland that I didn’t know existed,” said the Irish-born actor hollywood reporter The film was filmed in Belfast. “My stepfather fought in the Second World War. He was a Scot from Glasgow. He rarely talked about the war, but he was a member of a tank regiment and he talked about one particular incident that haunted him.
Loosely based on the true story of British D-Day veteran Bernard Jordan, the last rifleman Now available on on-demand platforms, it includes a similarly haunting backstory for Artie Crawford (Brosnan). After the death of his wife, Artie plans to escape his living facility and venture from Northern Ireland to France to celebrate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Part of Brosnan’s transformation into the character, 71, involved physical changes. Thanks to the efforts of prosthetics and special makeup company Millennium FX, the actor spent nearly two hours in the makeup chair transforming into Artie, and then nearly an hour to remove it all at the end of each day. “It’s a tall order,” Brosnan admits. “Every morning you sit in a chair and meditate, and two amazing craftsmen turn me into Artie.”
