Production A Quiet Place: Day One It’s really not about monsters. It’s the noise that threatens. Start in New York, one of the rowdiest places in America. I can imagine the largest cities in the world being swallowed up in a matter of minutes. Singapore, Los Angeles, Chicago; you get it? People, especially large numbers of people, are noisy.
They are doomed.
story
Samira, who lives in a hospice hospital, traveled to New York with her team. They were going to a show and eating pizza. In the show, aliens attack and now everyone is fighting for “themselves.”
She decided Harlem was her destination. There, Samira will get Patsy’s pizza. She and her cat Frodo took off. Along the way, Sam meets Eric and they form a team. He is enthusiastic, she is reluctant.
They endured tremendous stress along the way and even came close to death.
They become a team.
main actors
Lupita Nyong’o is Samira, also known as Sam. She is dying.
Joseph Quinn is Eric. He’s nervous and scared, but he’s trying.
other familiar faces
Djimon Hounsou – It’s Henry.
Alex Wolff plays Reuben.
it just works
The monster itself has been seen before “Day One”. In this iteration, it’s all about noise and the danger it represents. Sam had gone quiet. However, her new partner Eric is perpetually panicking and making noise.
Hollywood seems intent on shoving this odd couple down our throats. However, in this case, it works. Samira was completely resigned to her fate. Eric is trying to survive. First his fear, then his escape.
Frodo wanted nothing more than to eat and go with the people who fed him.
behind the scenes
John Krasinski and director Michael Sarnowski co-created the story based on characters created by Brian Woods and Scott Baker. Sarnowski wrote the screenplay. These scenes look great. The film is almost as influential as the 2008 film Cloverfield.
Explosions, panic scenes, and massive destruction all make it feel like an alien invasion. Sadly, we already know the requirement to keep quiet. In this case, there’s nothing new here.
whip that dead horse
Even though the movie looks beautiful, has a decent script, and great acting, it’s still a boring movie. This is a “been there, seen that, got the T-shirt” type of movie. It’s been done twice before, and it’s done better without trying to be cliche.
Louder explosions and mass death add nothing to the story. In terms of suspense, the first two films are much higher than “The First Day”.
However
Nyong’o and Quinn killed off their characters. Each of them knocks the person out of the metaphorical park. *Side note here: Quinn looks disturbingly like a young Robert Downey Jr. If they decide to do a biography of RDJ. Quinn should play the actor.
judgment
A Quiet Place: Day One Still a four star movie. I’d give the filmmakers an A for their effort alone. The film offers some jumps and a lot of well-paced suspense (see Costner? It can be done.). Thanks to everyone involved, including The Grip and Best Boy.
