As you know, Rookie tries to give all the characters, especially the Rookie, some unique traits that make them stand out.
It’s trying to find diversity, from the LAPD’s oldest rookie to the non-rookies in season seven.
Not all of these features can be implemented well. Selina Juarez is a perfect example. Selina first appeared in season five and was assigned to Nolan as her training officer.
Over the course of their time together, Nolan begins to learn more about Selina and what motivated her to become a police officer.
He also discovers that Selina is a firm believer in the paranormal and claims to have unexplained intuitions.
Selena and her sensory and emotional bag
Supernatural claims should be taken with a grain of salt, as there is almost always a natural explanation. Nolan tries to make sense of the situation by finding logical explanations, but that doesn’t stop the audience from being spared Selina’s insults.
Her supernatural claims are troubling at best. Policing needs to be purposeful and actions should be guided by good evidence or reasonable belief.
A police officer claiming they think someone did something wrong doesn’t solve the problem at all. Like everyone else, police officers can fall victim to bias, and the consequences can be devastating.
Selena is like a bomb waiting to explode. Just one wrong “feeling” and she’ll get someone else killed, even if it’s not herself.
She seemed arrogant, careless, and timid.
It was also a big blow that the writers chose a Hispanic woman who believed this. It might even be considered a racist stereotype. It would be funny if this character were a hippie white woman from a 2000s sitcom.
All rookies exhibit these qualities to some degree, but most are willing to learn and change, but the writers never seemed to want to change anything about her.
This went on for several seasons, but things may have changed in The Rookie Season 7.
We deserve Selina
The arrival of the rookie is also the best time for Selena to graduate. Plainclothes Day arrived and the whole incident was quite surprising.
Selina did a great job of handling things on her own, never once using her “senses.”
It’s probably too early to say for sure, but Selina has changed between seasons, and for the better.
All the lessons Nolan tried to push on her eventually faded away, and she even learned a few things about herself.
In The Rookie Season 7 Episode 2, Selina and Nolan investigate the case of a woman seeking revenge for the murder of her daughter.
Old Selina will have some feelings about these situations, but she will approach them rationally, connect with her grieving mother and ensure a good outcome.
In a way, Selina hasn’t lost her touch. She hasn’t lost the humanity that most police officers lose on the job. Being with Nolan embodies the best parts of her character.
Instead of screaming at the grieving woman to put down her weapons and put her hands where Selina can see, she thinks ahead, sympathizes with the woman’s plight, and connects with her on a human level.
It’s rare to see police do this.
This change in personality, if permanent, would undoubtedly make her better looking.
Her continued overreliance on unexplained phenomena will reduce the frustration viewers feel whenever she appears in a scene.
If Selena continues on this trajectory, she is sure to become one of the best cops in Mid-Wilshire.
Her transformation from crystals, auras, and stars makes her a level-headed police officer who poses no danger to the public whenever she takes to the streets.
Even police officers who commit the worst atrocities sometimes have no intention of doing so. They sincerely believe they have the best way to do the job, but sometimes, it’s not even very good, let alone the best.
All it takes is a police officer thinking he can judge someone by their race because “that’s how race behaves.” Or a person who thinks they know someone because they “grew up around such people.” Or even those who think they have “an unshakable feeling for someone.”
With this version of Selina, The Rookie is a better show and less dangerous in Los Angeles.
What do you think?
Was it me who jumped before I even hit the drums, or has Selena obviously changed?
