rookie Last week, “ABC” premiered on ABC to great fanfare, and this Tuesday, January 14th, it’s getting another great series. Let’s be honest: If this was the second episode of the season, I couldn’t wait to see how the rest of the season goes!
Last episode, we met two rookies, Miles Payne (Derek Augustine) and Seth Ridley (Patrick Kelleher). Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) gets a temporary TO position and makes a bet with Tim (Eric Winter) who can train better rookies. Selena (Lisseth Chavez) may still be new, but she’s rocking short sleeves now! Meanwhile, Wesley (Shawn Ashmore) discovers a detective is dreaming about his wife.
Episode 2, “Watchmen,” starts with an interesting premise — Masked vigilantes fight crime in the absence of police presence. It touches on the gap between the police and the community and is in some ways a surprisingly touching and moving event. Meanwhile, both Tim and Lucy discover surprising things about their newbies, adding depth to them – Seth’s discovery in particular still has me a bit shocked! and Nolan (Nathan Fillion) is tested just as much as Selina during her plainclothes day.
There’s a lot of nostalgia in the series. Food trucks, references to previous plainclothes days, and two specific detectives getting back in uniform…
The roll call scene is a particular highlight.
Character of the week: selena juarez
Selena finally gets her long-awaited day off, and it’s undoubtedly filled with many twists and turns. She takes a stand, proves to the audience and Nolan that she can be a cop herself, and delivers a great emotional speech.
Best ships of the week: jela
James almost never appeared again after the 100th episode of Season 6, but he returned in Season 7! He and Nila do seem to have their ups and downs, but when two people truly love each other, there’s always a way forward.
