Fans of hit series from the 90s to 2000s buffy the vampire slayer has been a diehard since the show premiered. Some have wondered whether in this era of reboots, it’s possible we might see the original cast return for some new episodes.
That never seemed like a possibility, and as the star of the show, Sarah Michelle Gellarwas very close to the idea, but she changed her tune.
in a recent appearance The Drew Barrymore Show (via CB ), the iconic actress expressed a new openness to the possibility of returning to the Buffy universe. She explained what triggered her change:
“It’s funny. I always say no because it’s still in the bubble and it’s so perfect. But watching Sex and the City [sequel series, And Just Like That] Seeing Dexter and realizing there are many ways to do this definitely makes your brain think, ‘Well, maybe.
Just last year, Gellar flatly denied the idea of returning to the series in an interview special effects magazineshe said:
“I’m very proud of the show we made and it didn’t need to be done like this. We’re done. I fully support them continuing this story because it’s a story of female empowerment.
“I love the ending of the show: ‘Every girl with power can have power.’ It’s set up perfectly for other people to have power.
“But like I said, the metaphor for Buffy is the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I’m not a teenager.
The actress is currently starring in Paramount+ Bloodthirsty Forensic: Original Sin As CSI chief Tanya Martin, she connects the show’s expanded universe to her original show.
“It could be anything,” she explained to Barrymore. “It’s a universe. I think it makes you realize that we need these heroes in this world more than ever.
Although a return may mean a passing of the torch. In an April 2023 interview with Variety, Gellar elaborated on how the show’s ending actually set the stage for future stories:
“That’s an interesting question. I think the way we left the show was designed for that. Why not have women share the power, rather than ‘one killer in a generation,’ there’s a reason for that.
However, while supporting the continuation of the narrative, Gellar insisted that she should not be the one holding the stakes. “I just don’t think it should be me because of the inevitable comparisons.
But I think if someone could get in through some other killer – like, there’s a reason we left it there. We could have ended it, but we didn’t.
So I’m all for it; if anyone has a story like this, I just don’t think I’m that person – no, let me rephrase that. I know I’m not the one telling this story.
Even if Gellar isn’t in it, would you be happy to see the return of the Buffyverse?
