Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will do something with Star Wars franchise, it will have a different atmosphere and tone than anything we’ve seen Lucasfilm do before.
The story, which follows a group of kids on a journey across the galaxy, has been described as an ’80s-style Amblin film inspired by The Goonieswhich is very evident in the footage we saw. It will also delve into what these characters think of the Jedi.
In an interview with co-creators Chris Fordwe learn that the children in the story thought the Jedi were fairy tale characters.
“We wanted to incorporate the idea that these kids had heard stories of the Jedi and good and evil, just like fairy tales from our planet or the stories of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table,” he said.
He continued: “We wanted to make sure we did it in a careful way that didn’t feel like a weird meta thing. So, Wim and his friends, they know the Jedi, they read With the Jedi story, they even did a pretend lightsaber battle, but we were very aware that we didn’t want to cross certain lines.
“Like when they pretend to use a lightsaber [fight]they make the wrong sound because they haven’t seen the movie. They had never seen a lightsaber in real life.
“So, it’s like finding ways to make it real to people Star Wars Galaxy…like their toys aren’t from Kenner, they’re more like tin toys, like a more old fashioned pre-commercial toy.
I really like what they did with this! This would add an interesting layer to the story and it’s just a cool little detail that I’m glad they thought of.
