slow horsehas only so slowly returned to our screens to see Season 4 begin with identity theft. We welcome the return of the “rejected” and all that comes with it.
I’m (also) slow at writing this good spy/mystery/thriller. This is one thing I have to binge on. Being stuck in limbo means anxiously waiting for the next episode of season three.
Story so far and main cast
MI5 Deputy Director: Diana Taverner: Christine Scott Thomas. She despises Lamb and the “rejects” equally. Yet she has no hesitation in using them. Diana works for Claude Whelan: James Callis is MI5’s new No. 1. There is no love lost there.
rejecter: Part of MI5. A mysterious spy network protecting the kingdom. The “purgatory” they face is at Slough Manor; their base of operations. These rejected people are also called “slow horses.” Also known as; losers, as their bosses say, “rejects”; Jackson Lamb. The legendary Gary Oldman’s performance is full of exhaustion and defies logic.
team
River Cartwright: Jack Lowden. Grandson of “Old Bastard”: David Cartwright: Jonathan Pryce
Louisa Gay: Rosalind Eleazar may be young Cartwright’s new love interest.
Roddy Ho: Christopher Chung’s narcissistic IT team member. Hated by almost everyone on the team. (And everyone who spends more than two seconds with him.)
Shirley Dander: Amy-Fionn Edwards. Drug addict.
Marcus Longrich: Cardiff Kirwan was also a drug addict. His drug of choice? gamble.
Catherine Standish: Saskia Reeves is an alcoholic who has a long history with Lamb. This is not a good connection. She hated the ground the lamb walked on.
new team member
Emma Flett: Ruth Bradley. Lamb’s new field agent is introduced for the first time in this episode. She grossly misjudged the legendary agent.
Moira Trigorian: Joanna Scanlan. New Standish.
JK Coe: Tom Brooke. The latest “loser”. So quiet, no one knew anything about him.
back to story
David Cartwright suffers from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. As the episode opens, two things happen. A shopping district in London is bombed and David shoots his grandson.
Same as previous seasons slow horse; The story is actually secondary to the scheme of things. The interactions between MI5, Lamb and the other losers are the entertainment.
Appetizers
slow horse There were fired spies everywhere. They get crap jobs that no one else wants. Rejectors have a lot of free time. Every spy longs to “return to duty.”
That changes when a new season arrives and a new sinister plot is brewing in the background. In the foreground, our main players have to hold their butts and figure out what the hell is going on; and then die.
This le Carré resemblance does little to protect its darling. Anyone can die. Quite disgusting.
(spoiler alert)
river
River Cartwright became the highest-achieving player on the team by birthright. He may also be his worst enemy. Cartwright played dead, and even Lamb didn’t know why.
However.
judgment
This is a five star effort here. We all know and I believe British television is the best in the world. Not just because of the story or design, but also because of their delivery. The lines and world of any British government agency are acrimonious. From Diana to the Rejects, every word spoken, every breath taken was dripping with sarcasm and a complete lack of respect for the job and their fellow agents.
“Slow Horse” is streaming on Apple TV+. There’s a new episode every Wednesday.
Take a look at this.
