when appearing in nightcap Snoop Dogg joins hosts Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson to give a balanced look at the controversy surrounding Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne’s Super Bowl halftime show.
Snoop himself performed at the 2022 Super Bowl 56 halftime show in Los Angeles with Dr. Dre and Friends, reminding viewers that performing a rap show on one of the biggest nights of the year was not a common sight. “I don’t really have a problem with it, but what I’m saying is, just remember the level of hip-hop in the NFL 15 years ago,” he responded. “How many hip-hop artists were able to be on this stage 15 years ago? So, I understand both sides of the coin and how people feel.
Adding, “I have no answers, no opinions, because I had the opportunity to get there through Dr. Dre. I’m not singing any Snoop Dogg songs. I’m there to help Dr. Dre, and that’s for all of us. It’s a great moment. So anytime anyone can step on the Super Bowl stage, just remember this: It’s a 12-13 minute show, and you don’t get paid, more or less. You have to spend money to upgrade your show to attract viewers watching at home.
He then mentioned that he had watched Wayne’s career develop when he signed with Master P’s No Limit in the late ’90s, before emphasizing that he had a good relationship with all parties involved. “Lil Wayne is the GOAT of New Orleans rap,” he said. “Keep in mind, I was at No Limit Records for three years and I watched his entire career and then watched him become bigger than me, who was already huge at the time, and I loved seeing him grow.
“Wayne and I are family to this day, Kendrick and I are family to this day, Jay-Z and I and Roger Goodell are family to this day. I don’t know who the decision-makers are, I just know that I’m going to be at home watching Super Bowl, when the halftime show starts, I’ll watch it, too.
The NFL’s decision to have Lamar headline the Super Bowl 59 halftime show this coming February has generated a lot of attention. The Compton rapper has yet to acknowledge the rumors, instead choosing to release an untitled song on his Instagram. However, Wayne posted a video expressing his disappointment, saying he was “devastated” by not being selected to perform at the Super Bowl in his hometown. While some have speculated that Jay-Z may have made the call, Super Bowl halftime show executive producer Jesse Collins recently revealed that rapper and mogul Jesse Collins does have the final say .
