Hyperpop pioneer SOPHIE received a Google Doodle on the occasion of her 38th birthday (September 17).
The Google Doodle comes with a short film soundtracked by “Immaterial” The internal oils of each pearlher only studio album released in 2019, was inspired by her most iconic looks and the Elektron Monomachine used for her unique vocal style. Watch the clip below.
SOPHIE (real name Sophie Xeon) died in January 2021 after an accidental fall from a three-story building in Athens, Greece. She is 34 years old.
“This video doodle celebrates the birthday of Scottish musician, producer and DJ Sophie Xeon, who is remembered for her critically acclaimed experimental pop and electronic music,” Google wrote in the video’s title. Previously on People who received graffiti on the search engine include Luther Vandross, Tito Puente and others.
Next week (September 27), posthumous album Sophie Will be released on Transgressive and Future Classic. Work on the record was almost complete before her death and was completed by close collaborators including Benny Long, who mastered and mixed the previous SOPHIE album under his own name and production.
To date, the record has released four singles, the most recent being “Exhilarate” featuring Bibi Bourelly, and “Reason Why” featuring Kim Petras BC Kingdom.
After her death, people in the music industry including Rihanna, Vince Staples, Sam Smith and others paid tribute to her. Earlier this year, Charli xcx’s boy The song “So I” was written in response to Charli’s grief after her passing. The two worked closely on some of Charlie’s earlier material, including devout and pious EP & 2017 Mixtape pop music 1 and Popular 2.
Elsewhere, SOPHIE has also collaborated on productions with Madonna, Shygirl and MØ throughout her career.
