    Stuber (2019): It’s a rental

Sometimes you find gems. Stuber (2019) is a wonderful action comedy. Funny thing is, Stuber screaming, “It’s a lease!” never gets old. The plane flew so low under the radar that I completely missed it.

Screenwriter Tripper Clancy delivers this cop/buddy comedy with most of the laughs spot-on. Director Michael Dowse is also the man who created this wonderful work It’s all over Pete Downto make this work. It’s not Pitt Downs, but it’s fun.

    story

Detective Vic Manning and his partner Sarah Morris approach drug dealer Oka Trejo. Morris was killed. Vic’s eyes underwent laser surgery for myopia. Trejo is discovered and detectives start killing people.

After the surgery, Vic lost his sight. He hires Uber driver Stu (aka Stubber; much to his chagrin), who becomes the reluctant partner of the vengeful cop.

Meanwhile, Vic’s daughter Nicole is impatiently waiting for her father to attend her first art show.

Stu and Vic occasionally team up to catch elusive drug dealers.

    main actors

    Dave Bautista is Vic.

    Kumail Nanjiani as Stu/Steve/Stuber

    Natalie Morales as Nicole

    Iko Uwais is Oka

    bad ass cameo

    Mira Sorvino as Angie McHenry

    Betty Gilpin as Becca

    Karen Gillan as Sarah

    Pretty standard plot

Stuber The film relies heavily on standard tropes and clichés. This means things are a bit predictable. Will these things disappear from the movie? not necessarily. Surprisingly, Stuber Despite these minor issues, it’s still a lot of fun.

    Speaking of metaphors
    1. Mole is the boss.
    2. All veterinarians can remove bullets.
    3. All villains can parkour.
    4. Bad cops love animals.
    5. Are Uber drivers intolerable?

    it works but

I will not forgive the filmmakers for removing Karen Gillan’s footage from the first volume. They should have more Sorvino. However, Bautista and Nanjiani make a delightful double act. The character arcs though are not only epic clichés but rely heavily on Hollywood stereotypes.

The action is good. The close-quarters shootout in the vet’s office was fun and well-paced. The stunts are also well done and look believable.

It’s a running joke that Stu is agonizing over the condition of his car (leased). This is a funny joke.

*However, at the beginning of the video, something seems “wrong”. When Sarah fired at Trejo, the bullet nearly went blank and appeared to hit him in the right shoulder. This is not the case.

    Judgment

This is a pretty solid 3.5 star movie. Everyone delivers here. It’s one of those pleasant surprises. Not all movies equate to filet mignon, some are just rump, but still worth watching. Stuber Can be streamed on Tubi or rented on Prime.
