superman director James Gunn recently shared his admiration for David CollenswaiteThe actor who plays Clark Kent/Superman talks about how the actor reminds him of Christopher Reeve.
During a Q&A following the trailer, Gunn revealed why Coron Sweet’s portrayal of the iconic hero resonated so strongly with him, highlighting the actor’s dedication, training and authenticity.
“The thing about him being so closely connected to Christopher Reeve is that he had a lot of in-depth training,” Gunn explained. “Like, I’ve never worked with such a rigorous actor in my life.
“He challenges me every day to really get the most out of his character and his story. Everything he does in the movie is completely authentic.
Gunn’s praise didn’t stop there. He described Corenswet’s performance as seamless, recalling that every moment felt real, even when watching raw footage.
“There was never a moment, even reading the daily paper, where you were like, ‘David did something that felt stupid, that didn’t feel real, that felt like he was pretending, that he was on the phone,’ never. He always Be completely present.
Gunn also shared how his initial anxiety about finding the right Clark Kent quickly dissipated. “It’s kind of magical. The funniest thing is, I got Rachel [Brosnahan] There’s also a self-taped tape of David’s first day of casting.
“So my biggest concern was casting Superman at the beginning of the casting process, and after the first day, I was like, ‘I think that guy is pretty good.'”
Reeve’s portrayal of Superman remains the benchmark for superhero acting, blending charm, vulnerability and heroism. Gunn saw a similar spark in “Cronthwaite,” suggesting that fans might appreciate a Superman who embodies the timeless qualities fans want to see in the film.
