SZA is hitting back at body-shaming critics on social media.
On Monday (December 30), the 35-year-old Grammy Award-winning artist shared a since-deleted throwback video on X reflecting on her time at her mother’s house during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and The trauma she suffered.
While many fans left positive comments, one user commented on the change in her appearance, writing, “AKA before she became like bbl culture.” SZA was quick to respond, explaining the comments Part of the reason she distanced herself over the years.
“You all say weird things – like this, wonder why I’m different and don’t feel comfortable with it anymore…” Haha,” she wrote. “You guys do realize I mean it differently because I no longer do live+talk or communicate with you guys like that, but it’s no different than changing my appearance.”
While some fans pointed out that SZA looked happy in the video, she clarified that the pandemic has been especially hard on her.
“COVID has been hard…my grandma just passed away…I’m so depressed, wearing a mask. Not eating. Over-exercising,” she explained. “But I always got lost in my childhood home. Still do. I’m glad I’m in a better mental space now. Still, those were the days.
SZA has been open about her mental health struggles in the past. In a May 2021 Instagram post, she shared her struggles with anxiety, writing, “I hate being outside inexplicably,” she wrote at the time. “I have really debilitating anxiety and I’m just posting this because you guys are going to find it anyway. Thanks to my team and my mom. At least I’m alive.
In her December cover story British Voguethe singer also discussed her decision to undergo a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) and how she felt about the results. “There are other areas I need to work on,” she told the publication. “I need to get my damn mental health back… It’s not that you can’t do these things at the same time, it’s just, for me, I realized that no matter where you go, you’re going to be there.”
SZA isn’t ruling out more plastic surgeries in the future. “Before I die, if I want to, I will do more things like this because this body is temporary,” she said.
The hitmaker is currently making a resurgence on the charts with a deluxe edition of his 2022 album, Ask for helpreturned to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. SOS Deluxe Edition: LanaIt included 15 bonus tracks and earned 178,000 equivalent album units in the week ending December 26.
SZA also announced SOS Deluxe Edition: Lana Will get another update in the coming days. On Monday, she revealed she would be tweaking some songs on the tracklist and adding new music.
“Just got word that all updated remixes and new songs will be added on January 6th,” SZA wrote on Twitter, noting that her fix has been delayed until “the label comes back from vacation.”
