Tareic Alphonse has been named the seventh and final recipient of the Richard Antwi Scholarship.
Alphonse will receive a full scholarship to study on the Master of Music Business Management course at the University of Westminster in London, which starts later this month.
The Richard Antwi Scholarship was established in 2016 following the sudden death of Richard Antwi, a well-respected industry lawyer, manager and entrepreneur who had made numerous contributions as a guest lecturer to the Music Business Management MSc contribute.
The scholarship has enabled six academics and two associate academics to complete the University of Westminster’s MSc Music Business Management course, which acts as a bridge between academic study, research and the specialist world of music business.
The first scholar was awarded in 2018.
As well as receiving a full scholarship, Tarek will receive an additional London Living Wage Allowance, funded by: Universal Music UK, Universal Publishing UK, Sony Music UK and Sony Music Publishing UK, To cover the current high cost of living and studying in London.
Bursaries and stipends total £22,000, plus mentoring and work placement assistance consistent with the academic’s professional focus and aspirations.
Tareic Alphonse is currently Membership Manager at Ivors Academy, the UK’s not-for-profit professional association for songwriters and composers.
He is also the president of Mossbourne Community College.
Tarek is described as “passionate about the creative arts, creators’ rights, and helping to create opportunities within the community for those who would not otherwise have them”.
In 2023, the scholarship was awarded to Jewel John, co-founder of live music events company Soul & the City, a graduate of the Bachelor of Music Business and Arts Management.
The 2022 Scholar is Janelle Mitchell, a London-based DJ and emerging music executive at Believe.
In 2021, in response to the disruption caused by the pandemic, scholarships have been awarded to two academics, Shanice Edwards, currently working at Sony Music, and Idris Green Holder, who received a scholarship supported by Universal Music UK and works at 0207 Def Jam and Humble! manage.
Previous scholars include inaugural recipient Jojo Mukeza (2018), Esther Bokuma (2019), who later joined the scholarship team, and associate scholars Daniel Beckley and Isatta Sheriff, who work at Universal Music Publishing and Promised Land Records respectively.
