“Working hard was my way of feeling good, and it got way more intense as the years went on,” Tate McRae tells Apple Music about a childhood focused on competitive dancing, winning national titles in her native Canada by the time she was 12. “It was a full-time job.” After finishing as a finalist on the 13th season of So You Think You Can Dance, McRae wanted to keep her momentum going and created her own video series, Create With Tate. “I locked myself in my room for 20 minutes and I wrote a song,” she says. That song, “One Day,” went viral in 2017 when McRae was just 14 and caught the attention of music labels, and in early 2020, McRae embarked on a sold-out tour before being shut down by the pandemic. But that didn’t slow the singer-songwriter down—she released her biggest single yet during isolation, the ballad “you broke me first.” “It’s the most chill session ever, and then all of a sudden, these haunting chords were playing in the background,” she recalls. “And I just spit out that one lyric: ‘But I don’t really care how bad it hurts, because you broke me first.'” Watch the film and the interview with Apple Music’s Travis Mills, and listen to music from Tate along with selections from the rest of the artists in the Up Next series: http://apple.co/-UpNextTateMcRae
