The producer behind the hit indie horror series TerroristCineverse, will develop a new Christmas horror treat by reimagining the 1984 cult film Christmas Eve, Deadly Night. It will be written and directed by Mike P. Nelson.
Christmas Eve, Deadly Night It tells the story of “a child who is traumatized after seeing his parents murdered by a man dressed as Santa Claus. Years later, he dons the Santa suit himself and takes bloody revenge.”
The film caused some controversy due to its hardcore graphic violence and advertising. Posters and TV ads featured the killer dressed as Santa Claus, with the slogan: “You’ve made it through Halloween, now try to make it through Christmas.”
Parents actually gathered in droves outside movie theaters. They just weren’t happy with a Santa Claus killer movie. The National Parents and Teachers Association even sought to have the film removed from theaters.
Critics Siskel and Ebert even spoke out against the film. Siskel actually read out the names of the people who worked on the film on the air and told them, “Shame on you.”
Samsung, the studio behind the film, ultimately pulled all advertising for the film six days after its release, and it was pulled from theaters shortly after.
The movie actually has a great opening, even more than Wes Craven’s movie. A Nightmare on Elm Streetopened on the same day. “Santa Claus Killer” only opened for ten days and grossed $2.4 million at the box office, three times its budget.
Brandon Hill, executive director of acquisitions at Cineverse, said in a statement: “I have been a huge fan of Silent Night and Deadly Night and can’t wait to bring Mike’s vision to other fans of the iconic horror franchise. .
“As we’ve seen this year, demand for compelling independent horror films continues to be incredible, and we believe this can drive strong audiences in theaters, home entertainment and streaming.”
Nielsen added: “It was an honor to have the opportunity to work with the producers who worked on the original Silent Night, Days of Our Lives and to work with the team on 3D. I will never forget walking into the mini-mall as a five-year-old video store and saw a poster for the original movie.
“I was in awe and started imagining the horrific things that would happen. It’s crazy to be a part of this film’s legacy so many years later! I’m looking forward to the start of production and unleashing my new take on this fascinating story. Billy Comes Back Got it!
