Joe Dante was a little surprised by his movie ‘Burbs is getting the series remake treatment.
Dante recently hollywood reporter Promote Max animated series Gremlins: The Wild Batch Season two returns this week. Dante directed the 1984 drama Gremlins and its 1990 sequel, for which he served as a consulting producer.
The filmmaker also directed the 1989 black comedy ‘Burbsstarring Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher, tells the story of a family man who becomes convinced that his new neighbor is hiding a chilling secret. The film received renewed attention last month when it was revealed that Keke Palmer would star in a series version of Peacock from executive producers Brian Grazer and Seth MacFarlane.
Dante posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) when the series was announced: “Maybe give me a call,” in response to a post about the news.
When asked what he thought about the remake, Dante said THR Laughs: “I guess my real comment was, ‘How are they going to make a full-length TV series based on this story?’ Instead, ‘I want to be the one to do it.
He continued: “Wish them good luck. This is a one-off story.
Dante confirmed that he has not been contacted by the show’s team about participating. As for how he feels about a 35-year-old film spawning a new project, Dante said, “It’s always good for things to have a shelf life.”
During the conversation about Gremlins: The Wild PackDante also discusses third chances Gremlins Movie. “It depends on the audience,” he said of the possibility of another film. “The truth is, it’s too big for anyone to not do something about.”
The filmmaker added, “But it’s hard for people to think, ‘What the hell are we going to do?'” This series is a great answer to that question, and because it’s a prequel and it’s animated, it’s the perfect next step Gremlins legend.
