george lucas‘ Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Originally including a major twist on the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it’s going to be wild! It will also change the way we watch the other films in the series.
artist Ian McCaig Speaking to StarWars.com about the film, he revealed that in this twist, Obi-Wan switches places with his master Qui-Gon Jinn. Lucas changed this at the last minute.
“For a while,” McCaig said, “the older Jedi were named Obi-Wan and the younger Jedi were named Qui-Gon. Eventually, Obi-Wan died and Qui-Gon defeated Darth Maul and stayed, This is very poignant.
He continued: “Qui-Gon becomes Obi-Wan. That’s why when you see Alec Guinness In “A New Hope,” he lowers his hood and asks, “Obi-Wan?” Now that’s a name I’ve never heard of…” Because he’s not Obi-Wan, he’s Qui-Gon. Right at the end, George changed it.
This is crazy! This change will be Star Wars legend. Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan is really Qui-Gon Jinn in disguise!
This character’s entire behavior will have a deeper meaning because it was formed through the sacrifice of his previous identity.
It’s interesting how George Lucas’s last-minute decisions changed the structure of the show and our perception of Obi-Wan. While this twist never appears on screen, it adds richness as an interesting “what if” Star Wars Legends inspire our imaginations about what could have happened.
